engine upgrade for 86 hilux

hi all
i have a 86 hilux dual cab and want to upgrade the 4y engine with something that has more get up and go
we live in mt isa so we dont do a lot of hard 4 wheelin
i would like to stay with a 4 cylinder maybe dohc turbo
something with the same gearbox bolt patten
i am not looking at using a v6 they die very quickly through summer
any suggestions would be great

It would work out cheaper in the long run to buy a late 90s 2.7, . 22r luxs are now very cheap and are a better motor than a 4y
