Hello
Apparently new PCs running Vista do not allow Magellan Explorist units to transmit NMEA data stream needed for moving map and various GPS mapping programs.

Someone posted this on another forum and claims it solves the problem and allows NMEA communications to be established between a PC running Vista and eXplorist GPS units. The original post showed a screen capture of GPS Log working on Mapsend Lite so not sure if it is a universal fix.

Explorist GPS NMEA driver for Vista

I dont have Vista so can test myself. Any takers?

Cheers

I have an explorist xl running NMEA into Mapsend lite.

It does real time NMEA. I do recall that I had a bugger of a time setting it up. From memory Next destination sent me a driver that was vista compatible. Give em a call.

It does definitely work though.

The only problem then is just Vista in general ;-)

Hello - further investigation reveals it is the same driver...it is available on the Next Destination website

eXplorist usb NMEA drivers for Vista

with this disclaimer..

"Please note this Vista driver is not produced or tested by Next Destination or Magellan Navigation, Inc and should be downloaded at your own risk. See documentation contained in the downloaded zip file for installation instructions."

The fact that Next Destination hasn't bothered to test something that is essential to make their product useful for a consumer, just adds weight to the fact that they are a rip-off organisation.

Go Garmin !

Hello - supsect they have tested it but because they didnt create it they dont want to associate themselves with it in case it does something bad. The actual issue is that the Magellan boys couldnt be bothered (or couldnt?) create a driver themselves to solve the problem with Vista and the usb NMEA data stream from their GPS units. This has without doubt lost them customers (existing and new), but the probelm is now solved so it can be scratched off the bad points list for Magellan units.

Dont want to get into what GPS make is best as there is no 100% true answer that applies to everyone. Both make a range of units that have their good and bad points. Customer service and user group support also needs to be considered. Good research is the key to getting what best suits your GPS mapping/navigation needs, could be a Garmin, could be a Magellan or even a PDA or Laptop etc.

Cheers
