On a recent trip, we were driving in very heavy rain for about half an hour when I noticed my air filter light had come on. I immediately pulled over thinking that some thing must have been obstructing the Airtec snorkel. The snorkel was not blocked and I knew that the filter(genuine) could not be blocked as it was new 5 days prior, so I opened the filter box just in case and the whole box was full of foam(like soap). The rain was easing so we continued on our way and the light would only come on under load around 3000rpm, until the filter dried out. Has anybody had anything like this before and can it do damage?

Pyro,

I also use genuine filters and wash them out with water when dirty. I have never experienced any sign of foam.
The air flow would be restricted when the filter is wet and this would explain the warning light coming on. The filter would have to be saturated for this too happen

With the Troopie it has a sump under the air filter box and this is designed to allow water to escape before the air filter becomes so wet that it restricts the air flow. I don't know if the 100 Series has a sump, but if it has it might pay to have a look and see what is in there. The sump is under the bottom of the air filter box.

You must have had detergent or something in the snorkel. Maybe some kid has been playing tricks on you and squirted some down the top.

Can't make foam come out of a factory airfilter. You need to give it a good wash again.

The light will only come on if airflow thru the filter is impeded. Theres a white sensor mounted on the airbox with two vacuum hoses coming off it - its the sensor that measures the pressure difference across the filter.

I think Phil G might be on the right track here. I was thinking maybe if you washed it at carlovers or something with the high pressure hose some soap may have entered the snorkel.

Thanks Phil and Big Red, don't regularly wash the car any more and if it were kids they would have to be fairly tall. I would be interested to hear from any body who is driving in heavy rain in the next couple of weeks (who has a snorkel) could tell me if they get any water in there filter box at all.

I have a Safari snorkel on the Troopy and drive it flat chat into Rain storms/downpours with the RAMJET intake facing forwards.

Prom inspections after the fact (rain) it would appear thatno water gets in at all.
