You say the Pedal doesn't compress, does this mean it went to the floor and came good with a few pumps on the pedal. Some of the Pajero,s had a problem with the front brake pads moving away from the disc and had to pump them a few times to get them back. They had a anti rattle spring or somthing on the pads that was left out when the pads were changed ? Somthing to look at ?

no the pedal did not compress, just as if the engine wasn't running, but it was. pretty scary..... like it was locked.

This rings a bell from many years ago, but not on a Pajero. The vacuum hose to the brake unit had gone soft and tended to collapse in on itself - symptoms just like you say. Have just sold my 3L Pajero so I can't have a look and see if it is likely. Worth a look when the engine is running a see if the hose looks round all the way.
cheers
