There are three Codan 8525A radios for sale here:

http://online.evansclarke.com.au/auction_List.asp

Scroll down to the "Radio Communication" section - about halfway down the page.

NB. This auction is nothing to do with me, I simply thought it may be of interest to some here.

How you going today, thanks for that link , I had a look , actually the remote is same as my 8525, good price if one could get one but I don't know , I think if I were to replace mine It should be an Upgrade not a replace .

Mike your going to have to learn how to do these links so we don't have to do a copy and paste , by using the link button below the area where you type your post or answer

I do the links that way on purpose Doug because it provides you an opportunity to learn new computing concepts such as cut and paste :)

Mike,

As I have no knowledge of HF comms in regards to units just a couple of quick questions :))

What are these units like??

How easily are they programmed and how available are parts??

What would someone expect to pay for one of these units??

or
Am I better off getting a different model??

Cheers Kev

Kev,

In regard to Al remodelling your new bus, I am very keen to see the finished product in detail, & to see what special or unique modifications he incorporated for you.

I have had a quote for a ute tray on my GU - a reasonable price from a well respected local company here in Adelaide, but to put a secure "box" on the tray doubles the price & has scared me off.

Please keep us posted, and best wishes. I met Al & Lyn & the billy lids a few years ago in Robe; very nice family indeed.

Cheers

I am now thinking of getting an empty Carry me Camper (i.e. no tent or internal fixings) and using that as my secure box. The whole thing costs $8800 with the tent so it should be a lot cheaper.

This is similar to what it will look like finished

Cheers Kev

Kev

Are you ging steel or ally - and may I ask why?

Good idea re the Carry Me Camper.

They (Candy's) are locals to me & I use their swags, canvas seat covers, and bags as they are good quality. There are certainly a few of the carry-me's around.

Cheers

Hi Kev

>What are these units like??

The main box is square and the remote is not :)

>How easily are they programmed and how available are parts??

Any dealer can programme then and parts availability should be good.

>What would someone expect to pay for one of these units??

No idea really but I'll guess $1000+

>Am I better off getting a different model??

It'll still just send radio waves out... which is what you want, at the end of the day?

Hi Kev

>What are these units like??
They usually work very well...not too sure whether they have selcall though.

>How easily are they programmed and how available are parts??

Easily programmed IF you have the software, eprom burner and lots of practice in doing the job... usually easy for the dealer as Mike suggests. Parts are a different story. Codan no longer support these sets. If the switch membrane goes...the only option is to find a second hand one on ebay or check the set.

>What would someone expect to pay for one of these units??

$1000 is WAY too much for an 'A' series 8525. The old 8558 antenna is virtually worthless and I would be reluctant to rely on on for serious outback travel. IF the set is in good condition it MAY be worth UP TO $500, less if no remote head.

>Am I better off getting a different model??

If you wan't reliability, spare parts availability, features such as selcall/telcall etc....then YES get a later model. If you have a sat phone and you just wanted this for a little 'extra' comms it would be fine, but you will need to replace the antenna.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Mark

If the 10v regulator is replaced, and you don't have dodgy aerials hanging off them, the old 8525's are almost bullet proof.
On Ebay, such sets go for around $400 with selcall.
They cannot be used on the HF phone networks, but will do almost anything else you need.
The heads do not have the ability to program in channel info, a minor detail for most people.
Parts are hard to come by in some cases, as some of the IC's are no longer in production.
They are programmed by an eprom. Any dealer or competant tech can do this if they do Codan stuff.
The E@C ones usually go for around $250 plus buyers premium plus GST plus freight. Bearing in mind that these are untested units, a diiferent source might be better unless you know exactly what you're doing with them.

Thanks for the info,

I am just toying with the idea of getting one ATM.

May have to look in to them in a bit more detail later after I have finished the initial work on the new rig.

Kev, I have 4 of them in use at the moment, so I'm very familiar with them, but my choice is the 9323/9350 setup for mobile. More $$$ but far more convenient in the bush.

Problem is mate, when you've finished paying for the first bit, you'll only be able to afford two tins and a bit of string :))
