Gday Guys
Just wanted to know if anyone has had trouble with the weight of the spare tyre effecting the back door of a prado or any other 4x4. Some people have told me that if you do heaps of off road work the door can be put out by the constant bumps and corrogations.
Any feedback would be great.
Have a good one.

Yes, a number of people have had issues with the rear door sagging on Prados. Not only after a lot of corrogations. Most seem to have been able to fix the issue bu adjusting the hinges.
K&N make a rear bar and wheel carrier but this will set you back about $2800 and you will need to swing the arms out of the way every time you want to open the rear door.
I plan to leave the spare on the rear door and just adjust it if required.

Hi I had one of those type of swing away arms on a 60ser L/C but due to my unattention I forgot to lock the system causing it to swing open and nearly clobbering anothe vehicle. I promptly removed it and made a false floor where I stored the spare wheel.
Apart from that incedent I am now 70yrs old and would not have the strength to lift the spare up to the carrier.

We have a 2002 Prado with one wheel on the door and one on a swingarm and have done 50000K of road all across and so far have had no problems with the door.

Diesel
I don't know which model Prado this effects, but I've had no problems with the 120 series. The first one copped a right bashing but never showed any signs of cracking.

Kim

I used to have a '94 Pajero running 31 x 10.5 tyres. 350,000 KM over all types of terrain, and no problems with the back door at all. That being said, the pajero does have a wedge-type arrangement that takes all the stress off the door catch.

Noticed on my NH (96) that I have some fine hairline cracks at the bracket mounting bolts onto the door.
Only found them after I removed the tyre mounting bracket to give it a clean up.
Had the car since new, and it has done a fair few K on corrugations.
Hasn't changed though in the last couple of years, but then we have only done about 5000k on dirt roads touring in that time too!
Run 235/85 - 16 10 ply LT tyres, which are maybe 5 to 10 kg heavier than the standard 235/75 - 15. The 235/85 - 16 just clear the bumper at the bottom of the tyre by about 20mm. I could put a rest in there I suppose.
