Solved it! I’ve been wondering what to do about moving map GPS for a while, my previous two notebooks died due to 4WDing and the moving map GPS market is in transition so I’m not going to buy there for at least 12 months.

Solution:
Acer Aspire notebook computer from Officeworks at $742 (about the same price from the Good Guys etc) plus $100 “cash back” BUT (and this is not publicised) if you eschew the cash back Acer will give you two years extra warranty instead! So I now have both a moving map GPS thingie (GPS mouse – eBay, $70) and a notebook computer and three years of bouncing it around on 4WD tracks – beauty! :) By the time the warranty expires either the notebook will still be in one piece or the GPS market will have stabilised and I’ll buy a 7” LCD GPS with all the extras for about $250. Offer from Acer only available until the end of September.

They are starting to come through Tony but are still a year or two away from what I want - the ability to run Windows CE software is a prerequisite. With in-car GPS stuff I reckon it's "Watch this space" for the next year or two.

But, apparently, still unable to support your claim with specifics, only insinuation?

I have found, on many occasions, that suppliers of products that fail, will fall back on the expression that there are exclusions when the product they purvey fails in any way.

Acer's warranty is not worth the paper its written on...sorry :-(

They will find a way out of fixing it i.e HDD has expereinced shock beyond its design etc etc etc etc!!!

1 day out of warranty? Pfft..bad luck!

just to add....

Grab a "toughbook" of ebay - either a CF18 or CF28 - reasonable $$ and Bloody TOUGH! Rated for all sorts of knocks - fit a new HDD if you want bigger capacity

Cheers

Well... given that the IBM and Dell notebooks I bought have both died due to sitting on the passenger seat whilst 4WDing but the 25MHz 486 Acer I bought in the UK in 1993 is still going strong and had a dry joint on a resistor sorted by Acer Oz under their world wide warranty... I'll take a chance - especially for $750.

Ive got an acer note book bought for that very purpose - no worries so far. i bought it when it was first out so cost about a grand. Keyboard is woefull and and makes it hard to type without missing letters.
I had a DVD problem with it since new which was fixed albeit the place i bought it from told them Nuh dont bother sending it back till its fixed when they tried saying nothing was wrong with it

Oh well Stocky... I have a new one here sitting in it's box which I'll get around to removing over the next few days and, subsequently, replacing Vista with XP (I understand it needs some SATA drivers) and I'll let the forum know how it goes over the next three years - good or bad - btw my GMC $98 generator is still doing OK.

Hi Mike, I am with you on this one. I did get the hd swaped a couple of weeks short of one year with no problems. I also found that a usb stand alone hd was a lot cheaper then getting a bigger hd and also acts as a back up. Did you manage to get the battery included in the three year warranty ? (I doubt it :-))
