hi all .I would like to ask your opinion on what relay arm you would use .
I have a choice of getting a relay arm which is attached to the steering box arm [pitman i think ] from toyota at the price of $198 or using a chinese copy from coventrys here in perth at trade cost of $27 .Which would you use ? bearing in mind if i was to have it done anywhere other than toyota they would most likely use the coventry one and id be non the wiser .I am doing the job myelf .

Hello Pete,

I always use the genuine gear regardless of the price, but it I guess it will depend on how important it is that the part does not fail. The chinese copy is probably just as good.

Cheers,
Dave

I agree with Davo re how important is it if the part goes, if you are 200k out in the bush from the nearest 1 horse town and the part goes, even with a sat phone you are still inconvenienced and my partner would be extremely upset if she knew it was a cheaper part that failed because I had saved $170 or so.

Things that are not so important eg alternator (if you have a generator) or starter motor (if you drive a manual) are reasonable items for cost alternatives.

Probably made in the same factory but one has Toyota's mark up on it.
Just a thought.

All the best

thats what i think too ,unless you can get trade through toyota the cost of parts is quite expensive .
i bought an alternator [aftermarket ] not long ago and it seems to be going ok ,in the mean time i might get the original rebuilt .
I was looking on ebay and they do complete tie rod kits for just over a 100 bucks ,to be honest you will be lucky to get a single rod for that at toyota .Its just the quality i worry about .

Obviosly you have never tried putting after market parts on a Yota.
i have bought after market panels 2wice and well they look the same but when you go to fit them weeeel they just aint quite. Take a fair bit of work to get sitting right

well i have gone ahead and got the aftermarket one for $27 dollars and i have fitted it BUT the quality is nowhere near as good as the original ,for starters the bar is slightly shorter and it looks a bit shonky but it will do as a stop gap untill i get the original ,which has had to be ordered from the eastern states and i really neaded one straight away .So for $ 27 itll do as a back up relay arm but as stated by most of you Toyota parts seem to be better .Thanks for your replies
