I have a whining rear diff and was priced 600 - 800 for a rear diff rebuild. I remember a mob called cost effective maintenance who reckon there products could help increase or extend the life of diffs.
AW10
Has anyone had any good bad or indifferent experiences from the products in particular the AW10 additive?
Thanks
Troy

Be aware that it is not suitable for use in Limited Slip diffs.
How many KM's has the diff done?
It may be better to bite the bullet and investigate the whine, rather than maybe masking a potentially bigger problem that could leave you stranded or worse.

What car is it?
I have a Patrol 2001 with the big (H260) diff in it and it also whines a bit at around 95/100k. It has done 84,000k and the whine has been there for at least the last 40,000 and has not changed. At the 80k service I thought I'll try a fully synthetic oil and I used Penrite SIN140 (I think). It has not made a very noticeable difference. So, before you blow 100 bucks on expensive oil, consider this.
Cheers

hi troy,
that is around the right price, get a second and third opinion if your worried, but if the diff breaks when your on the move, it could be just as costly getting it somewhere it get it repaired if your out in the sticks...

Troy
In 1967 I had a 1962 EK Holden, I had travellled across the Nullabor to
Perth and when I got onto the new Canning Fwy ...as it was then I noticed a whine from the rear,a couple of months later I found the whine was a rear wheel bearing,
I now have a Toyota Landcruiser that 711000 ...still using the original 1994 Diff, I add 1 small tube of Nulon each time I change the oils in theDiffs, gear box and T/Case.

Mate,
My Disco came with a built in whine.
Did hear of one that didn't have a whining diff once ..but the guy sent it back to the factory and they fixed it.

For $800 I would certainly do it by myself. Follow book, it is really easy to do, apart of access to press no special
tools required. Good bearing kit put you back for $150 or so and I would put remain $650 into diflockers and kill two birds at the same time. Additive to fix it? Dream on (but for a while stay on the road).
Cheers.

i made sure my passenger
seat was empty when i was double cheaking the noise but bugger me the noise was still there.
I think that, as been previously stated, the diff is due for a rebuild given its 12 years old with 247000 on the clock. Maybe i'll contemplate it at a later stage.

The question that needs to asked is, is it a constant whine or is it a whine when you take your foot off the accelerator ?
If it is a whine when you take you foot off the accelerator it whould probably mean bearings, if it is a constant whine it's probably the crown wheel and pinion.
I took my diff centre out my self had a work
shop do the crown wheel and bearings and set the pre load then I put the diff back in myself.
Cost of parts was about $350 cost of labour about $200, so if they quoted $600 to $800 that would be a fair price in my book.
Hope this helps.
Cheers Steve.

The whine isn't very noticable until your doing 90+. The whine i guess is constant but isn't as noticable with the foot off the accelerator at the high speeds.

Hey Troy
To me that is a crown wheel and pinion, so there for not that urgent in repair, it will just get more annoying the longer you leave it, pulling out replacing a crown wheel, pinion and bearings then replacing the diff, $600 to $800 is fair.
Cheers Steve.
