Retrofit HID in driving lights

My question is specifically regarding retrofit of one of the HID kits in driving lights, not the headlights – illegal at best and highly dangerous at worst. I am not really interested in theoretical discourses regarding the suitability or otherwise as there is plenty of relevant information on the internet. I would appreciate if someone who has actually done it (or attempted to do it) could share his experience.
Thanks

Hello George, we have Phillips HID's fitted in our Hella Rallye 4000's.

Hugh improvement and a very white light, we use the 4200k ones.

The only issue we have is when we go onto high beam and the HID spot lights ignite the engine goes into limp mode so we have to turn the engine off and restart, this only happens once and a while.

I think it is to do with the DP Power Chip modual mounter about 10 inches away.

We only use the Phillip's branded ones and can't comment on other cheaper one.

Thanks Richard,
I don't intend to play with power chips so I hope I wont be experiencing the same problems. On occasions I drive long distances at night and it would be very frustrating if I had to restart the engine even intermittently.
I am considering fitting Narva spotties (Targa or Taurus) with cheap 55W HID kit.
Cheers,
George

for the price go 75w kits, you wont look back.
was round Johnnos the other night, and fired up my 240 LForces against his 240s with HIDs and may as well saved my time
I'll do mine soon.. have the instructions here off the web from Bushy555 off outerlimits4x4 on how to..
pretty easy, and cheap for HIDs

Do yourself a favour and pee those L-F's off and replace with a set of IRONMAN SUPA NOVA's. You know where to get them from.

George,

Both and mate and I have gone to the 'bright' side - we both fitted ebay 'cheapies' to Hella 4000's to see if the upgrade was worth it.

It definitely is worth it. I did change from two spot lenses to a fog on the passenger side to light up the sides of the road and offroad better.

We both used 6000k globes and they are a tad blueish - if doing it again I would drop back to 4300k temp globes for a more whiter light.

I had to extend the wiring loom supplied as it was designed for headlight replacement, not driving lights, but this wasn't a problem.

I haven't had any issues with ECU or computers etc and am running them on a 100 Series Landcruiser.

Just be aware of the longer globes in HID - the 35w kit that I got have globes that are 55mm long - be careful when selecting driving lights to convert that they have enough depth to allow fitting without fouling. I'm not sure if the 55w globes are longer.

Hi Tim,
I have a choice between 3000K 35W or 4300K 55W - hate blue light. The first one (Japanese made) is available from US for around $200 delivered including discount if purchased before end of this month. It is fully tested and it comes with 1 year warranty. The second one would come from Hongkong and it would cost bit less.
As far as the length of the globe this could be good justification to buy pair of Taurus bull lights - they should be deep enough to accommodate any globe - insert evil grin here.
Cheers

George

Thats a quite a strong opinion of HID lights that you espouse there.

Did you happen to meet me coming the other way one night perhaps.

Could be, I get blinded every so often by inconsiderate/dopey drivers who forget to turn their high beam off...
On a more serious note, it is never a good idea to "punish" the other driver by turning your own search lights on in response.

I have been known at times to test my HID's light out put by gauging how much reflection I get back from the on comming driver teeth.

We try not to do it incase the oncomming driver has moth and bug syndrome.......they get attracted to the lights and hit us.
