Howdy all,
This weekend we're heading out to the Helena/Aurora Ranges for a spot of camping, 4wding and exploring. This area is administed by CALM.
Member Davoe informed me earlier that mining is scheduled to begin in this area at some stage yet the maps I have of this area have it listed as a proposed conservation/nature reserve and park.

My question is: What is CALM's primary role ?
Ive always assumed its there to manage and protect the environment. If mining does go ahead in this area we are all going to lose a little bit of paradise.

Daveo, that camp spot is a little gem isn't it. Crawl out of the tent in the morning feeling like King and Master of all you survey.

Cheers.......Lionel.

Elsewhere.............?????????????

If we take this senario further, logic suggests that environmental issues dont mean squat if theres a buck to be made.
Therefore, Alan Carpenter is anti Uranium mining because there is not enough money in it and will change his mind when there is !

If its proven that say the Great Barrier Reef, for example, holds massive amounts of precious metals, miners can essentialy blow and dredge the reef and tell us that we can see fish and coral ELSEWHERE..........

Feel an Erin Brocovich moment coming on........lol.

Cheers mate.....Lionel.

You will find that under the current W.A. State Government policy, exploration & mining is prohibited within National Parks & Nature Reserves but may occur in Conservation Parks under stringent requirements controlled by both DoIR & DEC. Cheers.

Thanks Topcat,
Thats cleared up the issue. If they can legally mine then so be it.
found the Conservation/Nature Reserve stuff a bit confusing.
Im not a tree hugger but am concerned about the environment, peddling my 4by and the smell of bacon cooking over an open fire.

Cheers mate.......Lionel.

PS them wheels and tyres are still going strong...couldnt be happier.

The last info I had was that it was gazetted to be either a Nature Reserve or a Conservation Park. Looks like they went for the latter. Cheers.

I was doing some research on The UK & that time of the morning was a good time to get on-line with some of their sites. Cheers.

CALM? they're the fun police.

Now known as "DEC" or the Department of Environment and Conservation.

Most of the DEC rangers I've bumped into have been ok but there's been some that have been real mongrols.

I was camping with some mates down at the Preston campsite, had a few Bundy's the night before when at 6am this ranger comes around hitting cars waking us up to get his $6 fee.

Nearly killed the bugger, I thought someone was trying to break into my car.
