G'day folks!

To follow up on my previous post, I have decided to purchase a GQ series patrol. I have all but two questions that I want your opinions on.

1) I have searched long and hard to try and find any common problems that faced patrols in the GQ series. Has anyone heard of any common faults? or is this a reliable, sturdy vehicle?

2) This could be a stupid question, as I am certainly not a ford man by and stretch of the imagination, but how does the Maverick compare to the Patrol? Once again, I researched, and got buckleys!

Your help again folks would stop me buying a lemon!

Cheers
Smokey

The Drive train on these cars is fairly bulletproof. Are you after a Diesel or a petrol? If going petrol/gas then the early carby models have issues with the head if you don't keep the cooling system in top nick. Watch for rust in the rear sliding windows, however they can be replaced for $200 a side which will last for years to come. Oil pressure guages and digital clockc in the GQ also are pretty unreliable. Both have fixes from the archives on here. If the car has done some work then it may need new body mounts as they wear and get noisy. The coils will be saggy if its been used lots for towing but they are easy and fairly cheap to replace. Good Luck there are lots of second hand ones around. Sorry i don't know much about the Mav's.

Yep GQ's are the best tough 4x4 you can buy second hand( Yota 80 series comes a close second...lol). Diesel is probably the better option for remote travel.

Agree with all that Brew has said.

The only difference between a Maverick and a Patrol is the Ford Badge.

Gday Smokey,

Brew makes very good points. Badge is the only difference between maverick and patrol.

The diesel is the way to go, if you can find one with an aftermarket turbo fitted by reputable dealer, that will save you alot. They are known as the brick on wheels so the naturally aspirated diesel is a little slow especially while towing and if I remember correctly you said you needed to tow. The turbo brings the motor to life. Have a good 4wd store do the inspect and you will be a happy happy man!

Cheers...

Smokey I have a 1994 GQ Patrol Ute Diesel, the best 4WD i have ever had, did my research and there was not anything really negative about the Diesel model, i had a 1998 100s L/C prior to the GQ, the GQ is that more practical for what I do here in Exmouth WA and as mentioned relatively bullet proof. My father had one when working out from Moomba home in SA and he always said that they we the most reliable 4WD he had used and worked on.

Cheers
