With their roadside service contracted out to very third rate mechanics the answer is no.
With the cost (in NSW) of their greenslip if you dont insure also the answer is no.
With that horrible woman who fronts their tv ads. who would want to know them?

furph,

she either came on a motorbike or stuck her tongue in a light socket to get her hair and face lookin' like that :-))

If you read the Open Road mag it's the same drivel that's been going on for the 30 years I've been driving - and if they haven't had any success in 30 years, perhaps they should take up macrame or knitting :-)

And with their tacit support of speedsters by arguing against hidden cameras.......
You wonder sometimes which side they're on. It really gets me when their head honcho gets on the telly on a thursday and slams the petrol guys for raising prices just before the weekend (or long weekend).
He must live in a cave because they go up EVERY thursday and if you want to save money and have half a brain, you fill up on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Cheers

Think that you'll find most notoring organisations are stacked (STACKED) with representatives from Motor/Auto Traders who for some reason - far beyond my imagination - have a vested interest. (Petrol prices, Dealer Delivery charges etc).

DIO,

Not sure myself about auto reps. But I am pretty sure the current Pres. is an ex union official.

I have been an NRMA member for 30 years. I used to be able to work on cars and get them going if they could possibly be encouraged to do so. Not any more with all the computer chips that keep mine going.

Even a third rate mechanic can provide me with an inexpensive tow to town and with Premium cover, a hire car or several overnight accomodations whilst the fault is fixed.

I have moved our multi vehicle insurance to APIA. Maybe so many have also done so that is why IAG Insurance shares are so low. We sold out 6 months ago and they got down to $4.67 a couple of weeks ago. $5.22 today

I haven't read the Journal for years so don't care what they spout.

Re the tow to town, I am in the RAA the SA sister company to NRMA, with Premium cover, the RAA will have your vehicle and caravan towed up to 200K's for breakdowns or accidents, from memory vans can weigh up to 4000kg for this service. Our van is around 2450Kg.

I heard that NRMA sub contractors will only tow vans up to 2000kg. Will I have problems in NSW towing my van if I have a breakdown etc?l

Hi PeterINsa,

The quick answer is "I don't know." Our caravan is the smaller 17FOOT type and I recently got an advice (just a post update I didn't request it) from NRMA that the would tow a vehicle and its trailer up to a lenghth and weight "much more than ours" so I felt comfortable with the margins and that I was/would be covered and didn't memorize the number.

re being in RAA and then being out of state and having to call on the road side assist and maybe tow from a sister motoring organisation that may have different tow distances or weights to SAA, I am with NRMA but because they maintain a sertvice for their members only within their state borders, ( and then recieve a bill from the sister authority tow provider etc) You have a contract SAA.

BUT I would have thought you would be covered for that weight or length of tow whilst anywhere in this island unless they SAA state up front that the length of tow etc differs from sister providers on a state by state basis.

Worth an ask ?

I will ask at NRMA in Ballina when they reopen on Tuesday. long weeken in NSW, and post a follow up reply shortly.

The latest edition of Caravan + RV (page 15) is announcing changes to NRMA premium care. Under the heading "Free Towing" it says free towing of all vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes for up to 100km, However I have just had a 400km free tow. Under "Full trailer cover" it states "Caravans, boat trailers, horse floats, and even a box trailer all enjoy . . . ." There is no mention of maximum weight or length.

Thanks Ski'er and Disco1942,
I knew NRMA was bad news and now have more not so good news from the RAA.

Rang their Breakdown line and they informed me that they have the same deal in regards to weight as NRMA will tow a van up to 2000kg however if your are a premium member as against standard or Plus members they will pay for transport up to 2500kg for 200Km over that, ie if your van is over 22 ft (Not RAA's figure) you will have to pay some sort of surcharge but this is negotiable. In regards to NSW they tell me that some contractors will tow up to 2,500Kg others wont, but RAA will sort out the transport.

I for one did not realise this, and believe a lot of other vanners do not as well. I do not think the caravan industry is to interested in publishing this either.

Thankfully my vehicle is reliable, but accidents happen. A friend's 4.2 Turbo Nissan Patrol still under warranty had to be semi'ed along with 20ft off road caravan for 200k recently in WA.

Disco you could be a year older than me, I don't like thinking about my age, I feel 25 just don't like the grey hair and bags under my eyes. Have a better back than my son and son in law both ex mechanics.
