For me it's good value for money.

For you? That depends on what you are going to do...

Do you want to be able to talk to other travellers all over australia for free as well as have emergency communication, and have many people who may be able to assist you if you do get into trouble?

Or would you prefer to be able to make a private phone call to a single person from anywhere with the simplicity of a phone?

When making your decision don't forget to factor in the ongoing costs of each:
HF - annual license fees around $70/year (more if you want to use Radphone)
Satphone - monthly fee of $28 plus $1.98 per minute (ie $336/year plus calls)

Remember a HF may last you 10 or 20 years and when you compare to the total price of a satphone and monthly charges for 10 years the HF works out much cheaper.

I've got a Codan 9323 - cost new was $3700 installed. You can't get that model new anymore. The new NGT is easier for the novice (i'm told) and has better noise cancelling. Mine's 3 year old now. Talked to Perth from FNQ once, but regularly talk to Tassie/Vic/NSW.

I don't travel enough to justify the monthly charge of a satphone, and also it's nice to keep in touch with the folks I've met who do spend a lot of time travelling. But most importantly for me I know that there are lots out there listening to their HF's if ever I have the misfortune to need help. Luckily the few times I've called for help on the HF it was for other unfortunate souls - once on the Bruce Highway (Highway 1) in a mobile phone black spot.

If your looking for secondhand you might be able to pickup a 9323 for as cheap as $2500 - they do tend to hold their value - but get it checked by a good HF tech if buying private, as some people like to modify them internally.

In NSW try Lake Macquarie Communications - Newcastle

What is the nature of this possible defect? Can't find anything on those sites.
