1 year around Oz with little kids

Hi all,
We are planning to drive and
camp Australia beginning Feb 2008, with a 5 year old and a 15 month old.
We are budget conscious, as we obviously wont be working (much), and we will just be
camping in a tent, and driving in our 4wd ute.
I would lve some advice about how much we would need to average each day in driving time, to comfortably so all the coast plus Uluru.
Also, which times of year to be in different parts of Australia. I was thinking south (from
Brisbane) because Feb is hot, down through NSW & Vic coast, across to SA, and then up to Uluru. Then Darwin/Top end for winter as it will be warm enought to
camp still, and then the whole west coast of WA? But which way to go then? We still need to do Cap
York and
Cairns and QLD East Coast...
Thanks for reading my ramble, any feedback would be very helpful...

Speaking as a recently registered "Old Wrinkly", you have both my best wishes and profound admiration.
One tiny niggle is the time factor. You sound like you may be SE Qld based, leaving at year's end.
So cover
New England area first, and just let it flow from there.
Mates, after 10 weeks, you'll either love it or be divorced. Either way, it's a HUGE, Beautifull place: more to see than any single life span allows.
Tip: spend $100. Join EO as members(surprising what may be offered 'on the quiet'.) and buy Camps Aust., if you don't already have it in your library.

One year is not a long time to do the trip you are planning. It would be ideal if you were not limited by a time frame.
Purchase Camps Australia Wide. It is full of information about
camping areas, rest areas and budget caravan parks. It has the GPS coordinates for most of the camps.
Think about purchasing a camper trailer rather than a tent. You dont have to buy a new one for $20,000 plus. I got
mine off a friend second hand for $5,000 and I am very happy with it. It would give you more comfort and room than a tent. Comfort is important - the trouble and strife can make your life miserable if she is not happy.
I hope you have a trouble free and enjoyable trip.

jump in the ute and BOLT. Take it as it comes and enjoy yourselves. If you let yourselves get tied up in "What Ifs", you will never go.

Do it!!! Don't overplan. You can literally get in the car and drive right now. There are supermarkets, kmarts etc all over oz.
A couple of cheap igloo tents and some pots and pans and go go go!

Lol, thanks Royce, we might need a touch more planning than that as we are in the middle of a reno on our house which needs to be completed so we can rent it out for a year.
Having said that, I like the idea of not being over planned on the trip too, so will make an effort to plan the reno and rental, but keep the trip fairly simple.

okay, I have now decided we will forget Uluru, and circumnavigate the country instead. Main reason is time constraints and the long drive in the dust with not much comfort for tent dwellers.
So...
North or South first???
I'm thinking North becasue otherwise we will be coming across the top in summer.
So is Feb too early to head north from the
Gold Coast? Will Cairs be ok in March?
Remember we are only in tents.

Would love to pack up and go for that long...
Last yr we travelled with our 2 girls who were just 1 and 3. We planned to travel for a bit in the morning...stop for morning tea/ wee break for a bit, travel - amy who was 1 would sleep...lunch for an hour.....travel then rest for a bit and every few days we wouldnt go anywhere just to give them a break.
We had a special toy bag/box in the car each which they could have barbies and the like and a lunch box each with snacks and drinks.

the sheep might i was is still in
wee jasper because we still have to go diving for it....LOL...hahahahaha ! ! ! ! !
remember thats how all this started...going diving for sheep...which might i say are in plenty out there - in the 10,000's....maybe the bridge that you have to cross out there is actually the ocean ! ! ! ! (wow global drying up has certainly happened then!!!)
