g'day Mick

If you want info on this subject, just put 'GU 3.0l TD Patrol' into the archives and off you go.

I have one, 2002 in a manual. I think its great but you may not get that impression from the threads in the archives. Some bad stories from the earlier models but I think we need to take into account that this forum is used by alot of serious off roaders and some cars take a bit of punishment. Also, there are heaps of GU 3.0 TD's out there so, with so many around your bound to hear more about them.

I think from what I read and understand most probs were with the manual gear box which has been rectified in later models. Some bad stories about engines blowing up (pistons giving up the ghost) but I don't think it's wide spread.

Sounds bad doesn't it??? Well, from what I read most owners love em' and some are on their 2nd swearing by them.

All cars have their problems.

I wish I bought the Auto!!

Good luck.

We love ours on the second one they have both been auto's we do a lot of towing and off road work and they have both been faultless. One bit of advice get Nissan to fit cruise control it will cost you about $800 but well worth it.

G'day
I have a gu3 3l auto and love it, drove the auto just out of curiosity but had to have auto once driven.
With the abs (which I don't have) the cairns off road guy said in a response to my question a few months back that he trains people to take out the fuse for abs when on dirt and do cadence braking manually.
Hope I got that right.
cheers

Not cadence braking, threshold braking where the wheels are not locked. Experiment by taking the relay out and seeing which method suits you better. ABS can be scary whilst towing or braking down hill on loose surfaces. Learn how to brake correctly doing the threshold braking method and you don't have to disconnect your ABS, you will not activate it. Cheers RobCairns Offroad Training & Tours

We bought a manual 2002 3l gu with the safety pack {ABS and airbags}, have had no problems with it at all, tows great though we have modified it a bit with 4" lift, Finer filter air cleaner, 2 hyclones, erps, dual batteries as well as some accessories inside.
The only thing I wish we had done is bought the auto model but cos we tow a lot I opted for the Manual, I think this is actually one of the problems they have with the gearbox on the manuals.

I have asked at the dealers as well as after market places and they tell me that you cant have cruise control on the 3l model, if anyone knows any different to this can you let me know please.

We will add a turbo timer this comming summer but mainly because we do a lot of traveling in the hot summers of northern W.A.

You can have cruise control fitted. I enquired at my local nissan dealer for my 2000 3.0L TD and they told me that I have a choise of two, the stick variety or the steering wheel buttons. Costs are around the $800 for the stick and about a $1000 for the steering wheel one. If you look in your manufacturers handbook they should be in there under optional extras or features for the TI series.
Hope this helps.

I have 2002 GU manual 3.0TD with cruise.

Just make sure you get the 'Auscruise' system and not the 'Command' System.

Auscruise is made 'vehicle specific' and talks with your vehicle electronis. There is NO wires to the accelerator as is intended by the drive by wire system.

Command work off the engine vacuum, have a wire attached to the accelerator and are crap. I have had both. The command couldn't keep a constant speed on my 3.0td. The Auscruise is brilliant.

Just hope that nothing goes wrong with the diesel pump. About 6 hours to remove from vehicle and very complicated. Hardly anyone in Oz can service them and a newie is about $8000.
Good luck.

Michael,

Have you had problems with the fuel pump? Did Nissan come to the party and is it a common problem?

Thanks Mick

1.- re air filters- I have a uni-filter on my TD42 4.2 diesel, and love it,- but would not fit one to a 3.0 without a bit of research as I've heard of problems with the air flow sensors etc. I could be wrong but be careful....
2.- cruise control- Command system works beautifully on the TD42, (I've had one for about two years and can't fault it. Cost me only $160) but on anything "electronic" drive by wire eg: the 3.0 you need to go for the (much dearer) specifically designed variety. Expect to pay close to $1000.
I would NOT own another vehicle without cruise control- it's a bit like air conditioning, once you've had it you would not be without it....
Cheers

We have Series 2 ST- 3.0ltr and would highly recommend auto with an aftermarket cruise fitted by Nissan. Only go for the electronic version, the vacuum type can't hold constant speed as well.
I fitted a CAV fuel fuel filter as the primary and kept the original as the secondary and swear by this set up. I have tried Unifilter and Finer filter and while I am a fan of these types I have gone back to Original ( I was not happy with the sealing properties on the lid and the engine breathes easier with the original.

If you choose to put larger tyres on (285/75 16) the speedo can be recalibrated.
The auto has a higher final drive ratio and gets better fuel economy over long distance. With larger diameter tyres the revs drop from 2600 to 2000 @ 100km/hr
Auto is great for soft sand and steep rough climbs, selecting low 2nd for most situations, Nissan have a hold button to maintain 2nd. The only downside
obviously is descending steep slopes where you will have to get on the brakes early as engine braking struggles, but so long as you take your time and don't
lock brakes I have had no probs.

What more can I say we are having a ball in our Patrol and as usual with diesels keep regular oil/filter changes (10,000 in the 3.0ltr) and after 93,000 kms you to should have trouble free offroading!

Hi Mick
I put 285/75/16 BFG Mud Terrains on after 15 000km's and I will need to replace in the next 2 months so 78 000 kms. I didn't expect any more than 80k so thats ok. Fortunately the last 2 months havent required any mud plugging because the tread is pretty low, but I'll have brand new for the "wet". I will probably put 305/70 on, same ride height just wider!

Due to the increased diameter, Recalibrate the speedo or allow for a vehicle speed between 6-9km/hr more than what your speedo tells you

Muddies were not as noisy as I thought they would be and are as tough as old boots.I have had no flats but I do pay attention to pressures on and offroad. They are D rated tyres and on the road I run them up to 65psi (a bit harsh on the ride but you get used to it!) dropping to 32 rear and 30 front when on rough tracks and as low as 10 in the soft sand. Also get good wheel alignment every 20-30 000 kms. In Perth I would recommend Wilkinsons in Bayswater.

You may notice a bit slower from take off, but its been so long I can't remember. The best thing is the grip on gravel, rocks and the increased clearance over obstacles. Best done at the same time as a 50mm lift to keep the wheel guards free. Fuel economy when cruising over distance improves. Revs drop from 2600 to 2000 at 100 kms/hr and in the NT she fairly sails along at 150 ( not flash for economy but capable)under 3000 revs.

Happy motoring
