Hi All,

There is one small disadvantage of living in the bush, when I want to find or buy something slightly more unusual I sometimes have a hard time finding it.
It will probably be mostly WA residents who can help with these questions.
I have done a lot of web searching the last few days, I now know a lot more than I knew before, in fact almost everything except where to purchase. Be grateful for any ideas, purchase shops or just brand names for stuff available in WA.

I’m looking for anywhere in WA that sells seeds for growing sprouts to eat, ie bulk size pkts untreated.
Found plenty web sites selling from out of state but of course they can’t send to WA due to the quarantine regs.

Ditto- I’m looking for same info for wood chips for food smoking. I know any clean wood will do it ( and we have plenty ) but gather that different sorts of wood make food taste different ie: apple wood is said to be good for fish.
Can find a mass of wood chips for gardens etc but not pkts of the clean & untreated small chip stuff suitable for cooking in an electric smoker.

I’m sure if I lived in Perth both would be simple to find. I thought I'd instantly google the answers but no.

I am on a large learning curve here so any advice on either subject from people who have ‘ been there done that ’ would be most welcome !

Cheers, Anne

Anne, I would have thought a good web savvy friend in the smoke might be the answer. I am the unoffocial "agent" for several overseas businesses.
They throw me an occasional bone so that I can source stuff that they want. I take care of their business and they take care of me.
Sorry, am not in Perth :((

Hi Squizzy,
Thanks good idea, didn't think of them. Same just what I wanted the seeds for.
Seems to be lots of info and books on the how to, just not where to get the bits required for either activity ! I have now found compressed wood pellets imported from USA at Bunnings in Perth, doesn't turn me on a lot. They even come flavored with Jim Beam ........ just what I needed.
Did you grow into full plants or just eat as sprouts ? Did they have many seed choices ? I'll try that tomorrow.
cheers, Anne

Ate as sprouts, the salad part of meal...also still eat them as munchies. The csiro book is good on a few different ways of preserving foods, again something on a boat is hard to do for long periods of time. (mind you is harder to go to corner store)

Hi Anne
I am a long way from you but we smoke salamis and fresh meats regularly here on the farm using french oak chips from the vats of shiraz in our small winery. Yes apple wood is excellent if you have an apple orchard nearby they will give you the prunings for free. I would be happy to give you 10 kgs of shiraz soaked french oak chips for free if you pay the freight....I don't think there should be any quarantine restrictions In any case you may find a winery a bit closer to home who would be happy to give you some oak chips.... we use them for smoking both beef and lamb plus pork based salamis all with equal success. Alteranively if you can wait a little while then we are planning a trip over your way next year I will bring you some and spend a couple of days teaching you the fine art of smoking
Kind Regards

Hi Anne

We use sprouts a lot during our travels and we usually buy them at health food shops. My experience is that the major health food chains only tend to sell them in small packets. Our small local health food outlet in Perth has an extensive range available in bulk. I can't even remember the name of the shop but will check it out tomorrow and let you know a phone no or e-mail address.

Regards
