O.K. I got the message about coromal "offroad vans" and I would like to thank those who contributed....but I was checking out some bushtrackers, kedrons, phoenix and trakmaster vans on RV Point and the thought came to me, how do you prove that the guy you about to hand over your hard earned to, is actually legit and you dont get stung by buying a dodgy or stolen van....your advice is needed again please......Phil

What about contacting the state regsitration branch and getting a clearance. That should also tell you who is actually holding the finance on the vehicle (if any) It's a huge problem if the is under finance. If the seller doesn't pay out after selling it, the finance company can, and usually do, take the vehicle even though you've bought if in good faith and for value.

The WA equivilent of the RACV should be able to give you advice on how to find these things out.

Bushtrackers, Phoenix & Trakmaster are very specialized vans that don't have a massive amount of vans out there (My Trackmaster is number 389) so asking the manufacturer a few questions would get you some good info.

Phillip ,
If you are in the market for any of those off-road vans , I can give you a good tip as I was the successful buyer of a Bushtracker 16 ft a couple of weeks ago .
Bookmark RV Point , Trading Post and the websites for the brands (if they list vans for sale ) . Every morning , check them out , because these vans are very scarce in the second hand market . I guess it's because Bushtracker and Trakmaster have a 12 month waiting list for new vans and because all of us baby boomers are looking for a van after retirement and don't want to pay new prices .
The people who sold me my van , could have sold it many times over , and I suspect , for a fair bit more money . But I rang them early on the first day the ad appeared , they agreed to hold it for me for a day and I flew to Qld the next day to look at it .
That's the sort of market it is at the moment for off-road vans .
Cheers ,
Willie .

Phillip, Our purchase was similar to Willie's experience; and after paying a deposit, the people held it for us while we drove across the country as quick as we could - while they received other offers. They greeted us like old friends and welcomed us into their home and to meet their family.

If you are concerned about buying a 'stolen' or 're-birthed' van, if you are buying a top brand caravan, I'm sure we would have heard on the Internet if one of that brand had been stolen. Ask to look at their travel photos so you can confirm they actually did do the big lap in it last year or whatever. Check the licence papers match the description and rego.

Most owners carry a thick file on their off road van -orignal invoice for insurance, warranty's etc, ask if that comes with the van and then look for the name to match.

Phil,

If you are thinking of buying new (and most of these brands are commanding near new prices when secondhand) send me an MM with your email address and I can send you copies of the layout, quote etc for my Trakmaster. They are very good to deal with.
I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy
