Good morning everyone.
I am looking to buy Pajero GLS NH 1993, petrol engin 3.0L, manual transmition, privit sale. A my friends syster wants to trade the car and dealer offer her 3000 AUD. She is happy to sell it to me with the same money.
The girl had it for the last 8 years and didn't have any major break downs or repaire. She used the car only for driving around the city and never took it offroad.
I am planning to have a look at the car this weekend myself before making any decision.
What is your opinion about Pajero GLS NH 1993 with 3L pertrol engin in general. Is it relabel car? What fuel consumption should I expect? What kind of weak point this car has?
This is my first offroad car and I am planning to use it for easy to medium offroad conditions around
Melbourne.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
AK

Hi AK, I have the 2.8 TDi version (same year) and am very pleased with it. A friend has the 3L petrol and he leaves me for dead. The petrol engine is rather thirsty but has heaps more grunt then the diesel, the extra power could be very useful if you want to put larger tyres (say 33" or 35") on it.

What ks are on it?My wife has the exact same model but hers has only got 82000ks on it but has given no trouble in the 18 months we have owned it. The v6 feels quite rough compared to the v6 in my Jack uses more fuel and is a lot slower.
They have excellent supportive seats and a good ride standard. We have put 31s on ours which has increased the amount of fuel it uses and taken away a far bit of grunt, I wouldnt go any bigger.
I am impressed with its off road ability. ON reflection for the price you are getting it for you could not go wrong as they bring arround $6000.00 to $10000.00 depending on condition
Cheers Pete

Hi AK
I just had a look in the Red Book and it said the following
1993 MITSUBISHI PAJERO
NH GLS Wagon 7st 4dr Man 5sp 4WD 3.0i
Prices based on km 210,000 - 350,000
Trade in price guide* $4,400 - $6,200
National average price - private sale* $6,500 - $8,500
Price when new (RRP) $43,801
all prices quoted are GST inclusive
It sounds like a good buy to me for a way to get into having you first 4wd.
Good luck hope all works out,
David

Thanks for feedback.
Is there any particular weak points with this model which I need to be concern about?

Quite happy with
mine - 2.8l diesel.
But Jo & mark - members on this
forum just had a bad run with thiers and engine problems.
Suppose they are getting an
old car now.
Others have had problems too, but most people don't seem to give details.
Common problem is lack of use in 4wd, the change mechanism in the transfer case and the vacuum control on the front diff can stop working. You do need to check this out carefully because it is a problem to fix.

Hi AK, we had a 1988 Pajero V6, but it was an auto, the fuel consumption was around 16 to 18L /100k around town and towing the CT, 20 to 22L/100. Great first 4wd for us, beefed up the
suspension etc and in the end sold it for $2900. Yours sounds like a bargain for that year model. Good luck.

I have very bad experience with Pajero. I would advice you to stay away from this car. It proved to me and my friends that Pajero is very unreliable car. Especially when it is old

Hi Rig65.
Thanks for your input. As I see you were very disappointed with your experince with Pajero. What kind of problems you had with it?
Was it very old and worn out car from the start point?

Until recently we had a 93 NJ LWB 3L auto. Bought it as a demonstrator. It was very reliable and we did a lot of off road and towing with it.
The auto transmission is strong and smooth. The 4wd selection system I found excellent but it needs to be exercised regulalry (monthly) otherwise it can seize up.
The valve stem seals tend to go hard and allow oil to pass and cause smoke. It is an easy weekend job to fix and the gaskets and parts etc not expensive.
The engine has many bits in common with the Magna engine so they are readily available and quite cheap.
Did 200k + in ours with only the normal wear and tear work having to be done. Driven gently we got 13 - 14l /100k. With a load and pushed used 20l/100k.
We were very happy with it and sorry to see it go but needed something newer and wanted turbo diesel - bought an HDJ-100R.
cheers

We owned a 1991 NH GLS for 11 Years and 450,000 km's.
In that time we cooked two engines and went through three or four clutches (May be the way I drive) and one ECU.
The clutch was only line ball for that engine..When they introduced the 3.5l engine they changed to the same clutch as the 2.8TD I believe.
We cooked the engine (Twice...insert embarrassed smiley here) when the heater hoses at the rear of the engine split. Off course we should have checked and regularly changed them but we didn't.
The ECU failed with the typical dried out capacitors and if it happened now I know how to fix it but didn't then. This is quite common but relatively easy to fix.
Overall the vehicle was reliable, the failures we had were due mainly to incorrect servicing (Basically we didn't). We had one gearbox rebuild (Remember ours was a very early NH and suffered the same failure as the earlier NG's). This issue shouldn't affect a 1993 model.
We took ours off road, bashed it up and down the underside on rocks and trees and the only things that ever went under the car were the hydraulic hose for the clutch and the rear gearbox mount (The one on the side of the 'box).
When we traded it the still had it's original wheel bearings and CV joints. We had no trouble with the Super Select 4WD system not the diffs and drive shafts.
The body had stood up
well and had no visible rust and the doors etc still opened and shut as they should.

I had one before upgrading to a new NS ,it was a manual v6 and had done 425000 km and was pretty much still going strong .Even the guy that I sold it too for $3000 is still having a care free run 6 months later.Apart from a gearbox overhaul /exchange I found it to be very reliable ,used on average approx 13litres /100k's .

My neighbour has a 92 model. V6 3litre manual coming up to 280k. Has been serviced by the book since day one (going by the log books anyway). Not one bit of smoke on start up or after idleing for a while and doesnt use any oil. He bought it off ebay with 220k on it. Is in excellent condition inside and still nice and shiny, paint wise. His mate is a panel beater and said it hasnt been smashed so he's happy with that.It was a one owner vehicle. The only problem he has had since owning it was a
water pump and a hose/pipe that cracked under the inlet valley some where apparantly common but should be done every 100k when the timing belt is done along with
water pump. Supposidly never been used in 4wd prior to him buying it but has had no issues with it engaging in 4wd including two weekends ago when we went to
Stockton beach. As mentioned above really comfy seats I think more comfy then my prado. He did say the sincro in second might be going as when we were at
stockton he was rushing through the gears and cruched just a little bit couple of times. He paid 6k for his off ebay. Regards Steve M
