Different Track Width on New Cruisers

Has anyone with a new TDV8 Landcruiser cab chassis, trayback or wagon noticed a tendency to fishtail?

I have, on bitumen, and in a nasty way on gravel, and am suspicious that the fact that the rear track width is narrower than the front track is the contributing factor?

I was towing a caravan on these occasions but so were our friends in an 80 series and they didn't notice anything wrong at all.

On gravel it almost went out of control.

Yeah, I figured someone would say that, however...

It manifested itself on bitumen going really slowly out of Bayswater in Melbourne on day one with the van. This was noticeable but not dramatic.

On gravel near Eulo in QLD I was also travelling slowly but this is where it almost got sideways.

What made me suspicious was that, while having lunch outside Eulo, a chap pulled up in his previous model trayback and actually asked me, out of the blue, if I had experienced fishtailing because a friend of his with the new model had a similar bad occurrence.

Where there's smoke there's fire.

BigDog, it was very minor at that time but noticeable.

I agree that it could be the van having an effect. I've tried to take it to a rather illogical extreme and imagine one of those tricycle type cars that appear in Europe with a single rear wheel, and if that was pushed by a van it would certainly get out of shape.

But there must be something in the dynamics because I'm sure that the reverse, ie a very wide rear track would be stable.

Who knows? It's the coincidence of having someone ask me that question straight after I had experienced it that got me thinking.

...or lack of proper "balance" between tow vehicle and van.

D'ya use/have a WDH? Have you checked that your towball weight is not too light? These, and other elements can affect towing stability, regardless of speed.

Another question: did you tow the van with a previous vehicle? If so, any probs??

Cheers

First time I've towed a van Himble.

I considered WDH's but was advised that they could adversely affect the flexibilty of the coupling off road, like into and out of washaways etc.

I am assumiing that the ball weight is about 10% of the van (2500kgs). It has not been specifically measured.

Mate,
A WDH will help if the van is large enough and you could probably disconect it for roads rougher than just gravel.. so the best of both worlds.

If not I'll swap my 105 for it LOL

Gone Bush,

Don't "assume" anything, my van had a ball weight of 300+kg's when I picked it up but total GTM is only 2 tonne apparently.

Gone bush,
I'm with you in regards to track width, It will become more noticeable on bitumen if there are grooves in the road.
Maybe an expensive exercise but would it be possible to find some wheels with different offset's, to correct (or get close) and give that a run.
I had 2, 7.50/16 up front, and 2 10r15's on the back ( just to get home, long story) and gave similar issues as described, really noticeable where the road has a high crown.
