Hi all
Well, we made it back to the
Pilbara, van in tow. It seems though the air con is struggling and it isn't Summer yet! We have lived here before so we know how hot it gets. Air con at present in Dometic on the roof. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas for helping it out. Such as shadecloth - do I just do sides or roof as
well - and if so how does air con breathe?? or buy a portable air con which will take up floor space?? We can cope it's the baby who is really making his opinion loud and clear!!
Thanks all
Mal

I take it you have a full size van and not a poptop.
We have a poptop and have had rope track attached on all sides of the roof. Just drill holes, run a bead of silicon and poprivet.
We then attach shadecloth and either peg it out or use extendable poles to get shade. We find it effective especially when there are no trees for shade.
The side shade when raised up by poles acts as a car port to keep the car cool as
well.
You could possibly pop rivet lengths of rope track to your sides, front and rear.

I too have a Dometic R/C roof mount, What I noticed is that when in a Caravan Pk that has a lot of residents the power is reduced by the extra demand , same goes for heating too , In the
Crystal Brook park in
Perth where there are 96% permanents the heater was just luke warm

Interesting about the power in
Perth. It could be the same here.
The air con we have now is Dometic model B3200. Van is about 24ft reatreat daydream. I think the weather here is about 37 during the day at the moment.
Thanks for the ideas on attaching the shadecloth. I had no idea how to go about it so that gives me a plan for the weekend.
i see in the air con manual you can install another unit in the hatch space but that could all be messy. Might try a portable air con for the
young bloke and the shade cloth.

in addition to my previous post the most effective way to cool the inside of the van is to prevent the heat so I always use shadecloth to cover as much of the van as possible peter

The humidity in the
Pilbara gets really bad Dec-Jan when it is also hottest . Shade to help the Dometic sounds good . I did some research on caravan aircons and got the impression that the Dometics were over priced , low performing , and old technology . Roof mounted you dont have any choice , but a rear mounted modern inverter system would run rings a Dometic . The old
Pilbara hands used to take their annual hollidays Dec-Jan and the
Pilbara tended to close down but nowdays big business and
Perth based executives insist on working around the year . The baby and motherare going to have a tough time unless you can sort out good aircon and other relief from the conditions . One method once you are based there would be to look for an employer who provides housing and pays the electricity and
water bills . Accomodation on the coast is good , but remember that the sea breeze up there is weak and wont provide relief more than a kilometer or so inland . I have had a wonderful 11 years in the
Pilbara and srongly recommend it , but you need your living conditions sorted out in your favour and this will almost certainly reqire help from your employer .

malboyd34.
Just find some method of shading the van but not obstructing the condenser on the A/C unit. You will reduce the A/C load dramatically.
