Surveyors General Corner Access

We are planning a trip next year and were hoping to take in Surveyors General Corner along the way. I understand it was closed to public for a long time but was made accessible via a permit system. I am having problems obtaining the information needed to get the permit and have emailed DIA without any response.

I was hoping someone would be able to advise what the current permit status is and if you are still able to access to area. If accessible who do I contact to apply for the permit.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

Hi ADM
I still think that it is still out of bounds(It was when I enquired recently)
All you can do is apply for your permit on line. If granted, you will have to come down from Giles, as the SA side in the APY Lands is still no go.

Check out and register on line at this site:

www.dia.wa.gov/Land/Permit/permitform.aspx

Hope this helps you out.

Cheers

Thanks for the info Stephen.

I have since spoken to the DIA and they pointed me in the same direction. Will apply for a permit and see how we go.

You can access Surveyor generals OK and the permit application is made on-line. The $100 fee is paid at the township when you arrive. I posted this earlier this year

"if you search the forum you should find the answers you need as I posted full details several times earlier this year. You can obtain the permit on-line via WA Gov DIA website. You'll also need one for the Great Eastern at the same time. They usually take a couple of weeks to email the permit back to you.

Once you get down to Wingellina, just go straight to the general office (centre of town past the basketball court and he store. There they'll take $100 per vehicle and $20 per person, issue you a receipt and get one of the local elders either Mr Ferguson (Donald) or Mr Eddy (Whose land the corner is on) will accompany you down.

A good idea would be to ring the office, or if no answer, the store, a day or two before you arrive just to make sure someone is there. If their in the middle of sorry time for a funeral for example, there could be no one about for weeks.

I hope to do Mt Davies Road next year but permits for the top section are hard to get. You'll have to approach it from the GCR as no permits are being issued for the Giles Mulga Park Road west of the station where you turn north to head to Curtain Springs (Can't recall the name) and also from Wingelina to Warburton via Blackstone. It's in and out on the same track from the GCR."

Good luck with the Mt Davies Road

Are you taking any females?
It is mens stuff south of Iltur

I rang the arts centre in Watarru earlier this year and spoke to a knowledgeable guy (he's been there about 12 years) who has done the road about 2 years ago.

As you can see they even have a pic of a welcome sign on the web site for Watarru.

Be prepared to make your own tracks and repair a few tyres.

I would suggest making a few calls and get some names of approachable people in the communities.
When you fill out the permit, don't just send it by itself.
Add another cover letter suggesting your route, why you want to go their (the arts and culture is a good idea) and also mention some of the people which have said they would love to have you come through to visit.

It's Surveyor Generals Corner.

And next time I go there I wouldn't mind coming down that track on the NT side.

In '97 I came down from Giles and then exited east on the Gunbarrel Highway (now the Giles-Mulga Park Road??)

Cheers

Looking for adventure.

You should'n't have a problem getting down there.

It is a shame the Wingellina community is a bit disfunctional ATM.
Ring before you go to remind them you are coming.

If you have any problems drop me a line and I can give you a few tips.

I was there at easter and continued on down to ILLkurlka road house on the anne beadell hwy.

I had my permit for this area back within two weeks of application.

Here is what the permit said.
"Great Central Road to Warakurna, then down to Irrunytju to the Surveyor General’s Corner. Then down to Illkurlka Roadhouse via the Tjuntjuntjarra Road."
