To all those who have batteries under their bonnet, how many of you have a full river AGM? I have a spare one and am wondering if anyone has the same battery under their bonnet and if the heat from the engine is going to adversely affect it? Best ask before doing it, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Just wondering if the starting battery is different to the normal fullriver, or are they fine to use as either starting or aux?

Cheers,
Dave

Davo-60 ,, both of my batts are Fullriver 80amp AGM HGL , the HGL is not a dedicated deep cycle battery but a hybrid that sits inbetween with the benefits of a deep cycle and the recharge and "grunt" [cca] of a starting battery ,,

Thanks Axel, might look into that next time, have a fullriver AGM as an Aux and that has worked well so far.

60AH Fullriver AGM right next to the Turbo, it has a heat shield to protect it from direct heat, just over 12mths with no probs, unlike the lead acid i had in there before it.

Must eventually put a heat shield on my 2nd battery on the Navara, similar turbo heating problem, boiled her a bit when travelling up in the desert last year ( 3 times )
Still hanging in there, 2 1/2 years old now and had one seriously hard life,,,,, will do the right thing eventually ,,,

But ill get another one of those batterys, tough as hell !,,,,

Cheers

Just transferred the 120AH Fullriver from the old Landrover to the new(er) Toyota. Was in the LR for 2.5 years and still like new as far as I can see. Also just bought another for the camper... very happy with them.

Cheers,
Mark

Sincere thanks to all who answered. I will now try to fit the fullriver into the tray. Looks like it might need a heat shield though, as it is going into an 07 Patrol and it is near the turbo.

It seems that they survive pretty well under the bonnet, which is good as I didn't really want to buy another battery.

Thanks again..

You can be guaranteed that the battery will have a shorter life under the bonnet when exposed to higher temps Greg.

But a typical 30% off several years may not be an issue anyway.

Robin,

Thanks for the heads up. I will keep an eye on it to see how it goes.
I also made a shield for it, and bolted this to the tray. Not too sure if it will do a hell of a lot, but anything is worth a try. It's made of a piece of aluminium plate around 2-3mm thick.

Check the charging voltage when the engine is hot - it should be less than 13.8 volts.

AGMs are better than other construction types, in just about every way - except for tolerance to overcharging in high temperature.

This is because the electrolyte is not in contact with the case to allow heat to escape quickly - unlike Gel or Wetcell.
