hi there,
recently i fitted new coils & leaf springs to my 03 hdj78 troopcarrier, they where 2in raised lovells.
since this i have a noticeable droning/shuddering coming from car.
it almost sounds like a diff or transfer bearing thats worn.
i hope i am not going over old ground
i have done a search on this site & cannot find any similar problems.
all unis are fine & all bolts are tight.
appreciate any info.
thanks mick

Mick
It's proberly the uni joints making the noise as thay are running at a differant angle tham before the lift,,
try getting the checked or both front and rear dive shafts overhauled
Cheers
Richard

The new angle will always be the same now after lift as long as it's not too much it will be OK. the new uni's will run at new angle fine.
Get tailshaft guys to check the angle.

Hi spudit,
Have you tried to work out if its coming from the front or rear?
with free wheeling hubs that shouldn't be to hard to determine.
Is it coming thru steering wheel?
Shane

hi shane.
drone & shudder noise is happening on normal 2wd driving.
i can feel a slight roughness through the steering wheel & acc pedal, but it is basically resonating through the whole car.
i will be checking angles on tailshaft on mon.
thanks mick

Hi mate, My 99, 78 troopie had aftermarket susp at standard height and it vibrated like that. I've have had and still do have vehicles with 3 inch susp lift and no vibrations incl troopies. The only one to do it was the 78 series. It also had a collapsed front transfer case output bearing but that wasn't the vibration.
I thought it was the shaft and had it professionally checked -OK rotated tryres -still there, drove in front wheel drive (no rear shaft) still the same so I'm guessing that it was a shaft in the gearbox ir transfer. Anyhow I sold it and never knew for sure what it was. It only had 137000km (really hard
miles mostly dirt)
Regards
Dave

Mate the susp was already on it but it wasn't the cause anyway.
The HDJ78 has a different gearbox to the HZJ78 (non turbo) yours is much stronger and not prone to shaft probs as the HZJ's were.

Mick
Had avery similar problem after fitting ARB OME
suspension to my 93 80 Series with a 50mm lift and Lovell rear springs. The closest
I can come to describing it was driving on the ripple strip on the edge of a freeway but about 25% intensity, came in at about 95 /100 ks and would go away when the speed dropped below
80. Tried everything from wheel and tail shaft balance and having
the front axle pulled down and checked out. Nothing helped. It was also inconsistant which made it very annoying.
After about a year it has completey gone and can run the 80 up to 130 and it all seems OK. I know it doesnt help your problem
because no one could tell me what caused it.
Good luck
Mike B

The vibration is most probalbley due to torsional vibration. This coused by the input and output shafts not being parrallel. The most common cause of this is when the back end is jacked up, the axle assembly rotates slightly causing the diff pinion angle not to be parrallel to the gearbox output shaft.

hi racey,
thanks for the info.
thats basically what the tailshaft place said to me today & suggested i have shims fitted between leafs & diff housing to correct the angle.
thanks to all for your input & will let you all know if shims fix it.
regards mick
