Hi, I'm planning on fitting a car cd player to my caravan. what sort of transformer would i require to run it off 240 volts? would a cheap $15.00 one from tandy do the job?

NO
Forget all about cheap crap , look for something in the $100 + range , understand when you crank up the volume a bit it will suck up some power ,
Have a look at the radio's output i.e WATTS and have a look at the el-cheapo 240v to 12v power supply ,
Power Supply

Hi Julio
From what you are saying I can assume you don't have a battery fitted to the van.
May I suggest you buy a cheap battery like a MRV48 from 1300 BATTERY for around $160.00 and fit a cheap battery charger of say 10 or 15 amps for around $150.00
This will open more options and allow you to use the radio when no 240V is available and also allow you to have a 12V light and maybe operate the
water pump.
Regards
Derek.

Hi Pete
I need more info.
Days away from power and type of light and how many hours per day per light.
Most common fit out is a MRV70 105 a/h battery and a 15A charger. Solar would be a 80W panel and a 20A reg so you can add more later.
Regards
Derek.

If you purchase a transformer you will wreck your player. You need a power supply as others have suggested. A transformer only gives an AC out put a Power supply gives a DC output.
Unless you are going for a super high power blaster then ask for a power supply suitable for a CB radio, this will give you plenty of capacity.

A transformer converts AC to AC, what you need is a "power supply" - a device which (usually) converts 240V AC to a low DC voltage, in your case about 12V DC.
Option 1 - will do everything you need:
Opt 1
Option 2 - will do most of what you need unless you want to turn the volume far too loud for the bush
Opt 2
Option 3:
2 bits of wire from the car battery

Just a thought.
The 15A Durst charger has a switch which changes it to a 15A 13.8V power supply suitable for HF and CB radio as
well as other high demand 12 V products.

Is that the one you sell for $275 Derek? Damned expensive 15 amp power supply.

Yes I agree.
It is very expensive if only used as a power supply but remember it is a 15A Smart Charger with a great reputation.

If you know what wattage the 12 volt cd player draws you can get a small power supply to do the job. Ask around, some one may have something in the shed that would do the job. A few years ago heaps of portable record players, tape decks etc had small transformer / power supplys. Just be sure to check that they are dc power supplies and not ac.
