Next year we are travelling with a group heading from
Perth to the top end. We want to visit the Bungles (and want to
camp in there overnight) but are worried about where to leave the caravans. I am not sure about leaving them in
Halls Creek or Warnum. Anyone out there with advice?
Thanks
Jo

Hi Jo64
We took our
Kimberley Karavan into Punululu National
Park (Bungles) in mid August. The night before we stayed at Leycesters
Rest Area which is about 7km before the Purnululu turn off (
Halls Creek side). There were a lot of people who left their caravans there for the day and came back at night. Its about 2.5 to 3hours to the rangers station from the turnoff. The first
creek crossing needs some respect, its not deep just has some submersed rocks to be weary of.
I'm not sure if any left their caravans in the
rest area for the night while they camped. The rest spot is fairly large and I would feel fairly safe leaving a van for one night. There is usually a few who ar staying a day or two and will keep an eye out for your van. If you do not feel safe then a lot of people leave their van at Turkey
Creek although I cannot comment on the safety or costs of this.
Its a great place and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Cheers

Jo64,
There is a rest area/
camp spot almost opposite the turn off of the Bungle Bungles called
Spring Creek. There are usually quite a few people camped there. We only camped overnight but found out that it was common for people to leave their caravans there and go into the Bungles for the day.

There is a dedicated storage area at Turkey
Creek (Warnum) opposite the road house/caravan
park. It is a secure area surrounded by 6' chain wire fence with barb on top. When we were there, 3 years ago, it cost $8 per night. It is run by the local indigenes so you would think that they would be reluctant to kill the goose that laid the golden egg. We left our van there for three days and had no problem. There is a small cultural centre outside the enclosure where you go to pay. Only problem is there is no power, no we had to put our fridge on gas. The other option we looked at was paying for a site in the caravan
park but couldn't see the sense in that. If you want to do the Bungles properly allow two full days - the scenic areas are at the Northern and Southern ends of the
park and really need a day each to properly explore them. And remember that it will take at least 2 - 3 hours each way to get in and get out of the
park. I would also recommend that you book ahead if you plan on staying at Turkey
Creek either before or after you go ito the
Park. When we there they were booked out.

Thanks, I think we will probably go the lock up, the Navigator is not keen about leaving the van in a
rest area. Putting the fridge on gas won't be a problem.

I agree you really need two nights. We did one night and it was a bit rushed.
