Excellent Service in Melbourne

We were at a caravan park in Melbourne on Saturday 2 weeks ago about to jump off on a 10 day camping trip along the Murray. Having packed the Paj I was doing my morning 'first service' when I noticed a puddle of brake fluid under the back axle.

There was a hole in the flexible brake line that runs from the chassis to the back axle letting all the vital stopping stuff leak out.

"Oh my golly gosh" I said to myself "That doesn't look good"

On to the RACV who were sympathetic but not much help - all the contacts they gave me were not able to help until the following week and the RACV would not offer a tow to anywhere as we were not stuck on the road. I considered fixing it myself, but the local mitsi dealers I called did not carry the part.

We finally found some guy about 10km away who would have a look but would not promise anything.

As we were checking out of the van park I mentioned my problem to the nice lady in the office and she said:
"Have you tried Joe down the road, he might be able to help?"

So off we went to see Joe whose workshop was only 400 metres down the road.
"No problem I can do that - do you want it fixed today?"
"Yes Please"
"No worries, I will get the part made up. Bring it back in in an hour and it will be done by early this afternoon"

We decided to spend another night in Melbourne now that we had missed our planned early get away so back we went to the caravan park where the nice lady booked us into the same cabin we had just left by re-arranging other bookings (and she gave us a discount!).

2 hours later the Paj is all fixed (Joe also changed the wipers that were getting old and greased a tie rod end that he heard squeak as I drove in. All done at a great price.

Grateful thanks to 2 Great businesses who I can't recommend too highly:

I'm a bit worried about the nav aids in your rig pic Bonz. No two of them seem to show the same position!

What a great story Pete!

Hey, how do you decide where to camp on the murray, are there certain areas etc.? We just came back from Swan Hill and Echuca from a big drive, hasnt Exhuca changed over the years, its so over commercialised now, dont like it at all, love other parts of the murray though and would like to camp up there next time.

Hi Justin,

We examine the maps for likely looking areas in state forests on the Murray. My work regularly takes me out to Berri, Mildura, Robinvale and Swan Hill so I drop in on the way past and way point any likely spots. Each camping trip we usually look in somewhere else to see what it is like.

This time we were in Melbourne to see the "War of the Worlds" stage show and had then planned on spending a week camped near Swan Hill in the Nyah State Forest. We thought we would drop in to the Barmah State Forrest on the way to look for somewhere for our next Murray Trip in December.

We found such a nice spot we ended up camping there instead. Inside of a bend, big sandy beach, stacks of nice fire wood and at the end of a rough track where we were unlikely to be disturbed. Even though it was school holidays we only saw one other car.

No mobile phone coverage made it perfect. We enjoyed doing nothing for 5 days then moved on to our planned camp near Swan Hill.

Cheers

Pete

Hi Pete

What was war of the worlds like? Would have loved to have seen that, I have the original recording.

Sounds like a great trip. I think I saw turnoffs to those forests you mention. Do you just camp wherver you like in the forests? I always wondered where all these people went over the years that say theya re camping up the murray.Sandy beach sounds nice, it was 29 one of the days we were up there, do u swim in the murray?

War of the worlds was brilliant, especially the way they recreated Richard Burton as a computer generated hologram. The 40 foot fighting machine was pretty good too.

You can camp where you like in VIC and NSW state forests for free, but obviously there are no facilities. If you have OziExplorer I can send you a waypoint file of places we have camped on the river.

I did jump into the river, but it was freezing!

We havent got a caravan or anything and this trip we stayed at cabins at big 4's mainly but its a bit too yuppyish for me. I looked around and saw all these 4wd rigs and thought to myself they probably tell their friends they went camping, whilst in their swanky new air conditioned cabins!
I want to start camping and stuff, I dont know about the wife and kids, I guess I could compromise and take them to a big 4 or something after every 3 nights out the bush! Of course, I would have to start collecting all that camping stuff and gps's and more and more.....

Thanks for mentioning oziexplorer, that looks bleep hot. What kind of gps do you have? I see all the different ones in all the catalogues, but I see that oziexplorer only supports a few. I was thinking of tom tom before, but maybe garmin for brand name. Also reading on here about getting the gps's nicked from the 4wds, so I would probably mount away from windscreen so it cant be detected that there has been one suckered to the screen!

I bet it was cold! Pool at the big 4 in swan hill was freezing and that was sposed to be heated!!!

We use a laptop with a cheap GPS USB mouse plugged into it when on the move. Ozi will recognise all of these. For handlheld use we have a Garmin Etrex.

If you search the forum on here there is heaps of info about OziExplorer - it is a very good program.
