Buying a 4WD Feedback

We currently own a 1992 Duel Fuel Toyota Landcruiser, and a 20' Spaceline Caravan. We are looking at upgrading and would like to know if a Prado Turbo Diesel (I like the idea of the CRD) would be big enough to pull the van, (also looking at going to 23 - 25' van). I would appreciate some help. Is a Prado too small for a 25' van? Our plans are to tour Australia.

Hi dbh

Check Prado specs at http://www.toyota.com.au/toyota/vehicle/Content/0,4664,5050_582,00.html

Tow capacity is 2500kg; you will probably be pushing the limit on anything over 21'. How much does your Spaceline weigh?

Cheers

Thanks Bryan 06 for your help, the Spaceline is 1500kg but that is empty weight so by the time you put extras on I think the Prado would really be working. The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a tow capacity of 3500kg the same as the Toyota Landcruiser, but having had three Landcruiser's it is a bit hard to go away from Toyota. Can anyone convince me otherwise?

I know the old saying of each to his own, but why in the heck would you want to tow a 25' van around Australia for.
What ever you decide and eventually do, i hope you have a great time.

Hi Colin
What sort of unit would you suggest? We are planning to live in the van for quite while, and do enjoy a bit of space. A motor home and a fifth wheeler have both been in our thoughts also. I think we may be categorised among "the grey nomads".
Cheers

I've towed a lot around Australia, upto 4 months at a time, and you tend to spend a fair bit of time sitting outside. The bigger vans limit access to certain places as well as cost a lot more to tow. The biggest cost in touring is the fuel bills, another difficulty with large vans can be even finding easy access to sites, so yes buy a van that will suit your particular needs but with that in mind, buy as small as you can for towing ease.
