Hello forumites, at exactly 1 minute past the hour of 5, for the past week and a bit, we (wife and I) have been receiving a phone call, answer it and they promptly hang up. No noise, just silence.

Our phone does not have caller id, so is there any way that we can possible find out who this is that is calling. i.e. are there in line caller id boxes available etc?

IT IS VERY FRUSTRATING!!!

cheers

Mike

Don't answer it. Then do *10#.

Mike,
There used to be a box that plugged into the phone line to give you caller id, but I don't know if they are still available. Try tandy or tricky dicky.

The alternative is to let the phone ring out, then do the *10# to identify the last unanswered call.

All this becomes academic if the caller has a private number.

What Brew said, although if they have a "private" number, it won't work.
*10# gives you the last unanswered call number.

Cheers

goodday mike
we have a similar problem at varying times of the day and what we believe it is is some companies generate phone calls that hang up on answering to see if people are home and that time slot for that # is then passed on to telemarketers or so i am led to believe
i might be being led up the garden path but they are still bloody nusiance calls

I've heard that some call centres use computers to auto dial a list of numbers. it somehow registers when a call is answered and that feedback is used to identify when you are most likely to be home, hence the best time for the salesperson / call centre to call.

not sure how it works if you have an answering machine!

Do yourself a favour and register on the governments do not call register, it gets rid of about 90% of these unwanted calls.

Hey Signman.

It does if you don't tell them it's a business phone.

Cheers Steve.

Hi guys, just talking to my wife about it, www.adma.com.au to de register and most of the calls you get coming thru will be from ADMA. Apparently the way they work is they have a dialler, that may ring say 75 calls (automatic) then when 50 are picked up the other 25 just get automatically dropped out. Hence the picking up the phone and no one is there.!

My guess is Telemarketings too. We have friends who thought they were being targeted by nuisance calls, and got police involved. It was all traced to the automatic dialing of telemarketing. Just get an answering machine, and tell you family and friends to announce themselves and then you can pick up the phone. The telemarketers hang up on answering machines.

Mike we get the same thing at about 4.30 or so. We both work but when we are home we cop it every day. We have an answering machine that screens our calls but I can't stand the sound of a phone ringing so I pick the damned thing up after about 2 rings if in ear shot or on the puter. Always nobody's there.

I'm a bit surprised by the responses NO ONE recommended reporting the matter to the service provider (Telstra, Optus or whoever) stating that it is a nuisance call. They will investigate and handle matter for you.

When you answer don't talk just push 3 numbers on your phone which puts a tone through, then just quietly say you are now being traced.

Worked for me, give it a go.

Could also be the Tax Office as they are now using an automated dialing system to ring people who owe money.
They have made no excuses for the fact that they would target individuals and small business owners during the dinner period of 5 pm to 7.30 pm as the most likely time to get hold of the individual they wanted.

This probably won't help you but I once came across the ultimate answer to nuisance calls.

We used to get them when I was in my early teens. It went on for months, no particular pattern but it was always outside school times. It was driving mum crazy.

Anyway one day I was out riding my bike when I noticed one of the local trouble makers in the phone box up the road, hand over the receiver and laughing. I snuck up behind him, trapped him in the box and took the phone off him. "Is that you mum?" I asked. You can guess what happened when she said yes. Geeee it felt good.

The calls stopped.
