I am doing wheel bearings on my Pajero for the first time and I hear differing methods of tightening them up.
Some say tighten them right up and then right off again then torque to specs. (as does the manual) Others say just torque them up once.
Also, the old question of filling the hub with grease or just packing the bearing. The old grease was brand new in the middle of the hub, suggesting it never made any contact and was not necessary.
All thoughts appreciated.
Colin.

Colin, I'm with the follow-your-manual crowd. Tighten them up to
seat the bearings, give the hub a few spins and back off and retorque to spec.
It's up to you whether you pack the hub full of grease or not. If you expect to be in
water you might want to pack them full simply because if/when a seal lets some
water in, the more grease there is in there the less
water there will be. Yes I've had hubs full of
water and the grease turn to mid. And in this case be sure to use
water resistant grease. If you'll never be near
water or trust your hub seals just use pack the bearings only with normal ATB grease and smear enough around the inside that if a bit of moisture gets in it won't lead to rusting. Just my opinion, Casper.

Cheers Cowpat, I thought the manual was the way to go but read a post somewhere where someone said that was forty year old practice.
The vehicle has done 100k on the bearings I assume were installed this way and they seem fine, just doing them because I'm there anyway.
Thanks.

Do NOT use HTB in 4wd's as they do not get hot enough due to the large metal mass in the hub to melt the HTB.
Castrol APXT or similar, much better for the bearings which should last the life of the vehicle if looked after.
Do search of the archives as this has been discussed at length in the past.
