Hi All

I was looking at trying to reduce the road noise in my 2000 hilux 4wd by putting insulation under the vinyl floor. Can anyone recommend a type of insulation to use?

There is a bitumen based sheet with a felt backing that is very good. I comes in panels that are flexible and you stick them in place.

Try this link http://www.tru-fitcarpets.com.au/s_shield.htm

A point to bear in mind....
Some insulation materials usually hold moisture pretty well.

If you are into water crossings etc, just be aware of the potential for rust and pick the insulation material carefully.

What I've done in 4 troopies over the last 20 years is go to your favourite camping store/KMart and buy some cheap foam sleeping mats. Being closed cell foam they don't hold moisture and make anoticeable difference to noise and heat transfer into the cabin.
They come in approx 10mm thickness which is good because anything thicker tends to result in the vinyl mats not fitting really well anymore.
Pull the existing mats and seats out, then cut the sleeping mats to fit, I used to glue them in place with contact glue up the firewall, over the trans humps and under the seats. In the footwells just cut to shape and lay them in place so they can be removed if you dunk it.
If you want to get keen they can be stuck inside the doors and up the rear of the cabin as well.

There is also the spray on stuff that goes outside under floor pan, helps to quiten it down but also stops alot of rocks from chipping the paint under floor pan reducing chances of rust. As mentioned above about the stuff you stick down under the vinyl if water gets in under it it will eventually cause rust over a period of time, hence the old falcons, holdens, valiants etc with vinyl floor coverings rusting through the floor due to water, moisture getting in and cant dry out. There are water based ones and also petroleum based ones. Very similiar to the stuff they use for rust proofing but thicker. Can actually buy it in 4L containers from super cheap or in spray cans as well. Just another option. Regards Steve

Hey, tectyl is for the outside and inner doors, this is used by panel beaters for rust protection, and tar matting for the inside, also to paint the tar matting the colour of the body/ interior so it looks original.
The tectyl is a waxy substance and you can spray it from a air compressor, you can get both lots from your local panel beaters suppliers.
The tar mat is used to replace the tar sheets i cars, you will need a heat gun and good welding gloves to mould it into place.

Cheers and have fun

If you want to stop low-frequency noise then it comes down to weight.

Lead sheet glued in place with bituminous compound will work the best in critical spots.
