hi, we are thinking of going to portland for the summer holidays and i was wondering if anyone could shed some light on which caravan parks to go to or to stay clear of. we are looking for some
where that allows a dog, that there is fishing near by. i did google the parks in the area and Narrawong Holiday Park did seem quite nice online. hope you can help shed some light on the area before i book. thanks all input much appreciated from chris.

Narrawong is nice. Stayed there a couple of years ago. Fish in the river or fish in the ocean. Great place. Campfires were allowed in fireplaces, firewood available on site.

sadly no more fires at narrawong, but still a lovely park. There are some great camping sites in the region. You will need to book for christmas well in advance as the population of Portland seems to move the Narrawong for the Xmas holidays. I doubt you'll get in without about 6-12 months notice. We were the only interstaters at Narrawong one year and it was strange to see locals drag everything, and we mean absolutely everything, from their homes to go camping for a few weeks only a few kms down the rd. Bentink st in Portland has a few caravan parks worth a look. Have a great holiday.

Narrawong doesn't allow pets and like another poster said locals cart all the house contents while taking their summer holidays there ( while still travelling to Portland to work). Never understood that myself. Having said that I have heard that it is a nice Park.

Henty Bay does allow pets

It is closer to Portland.

Both are on the sea front.

Both of these are owned by the same people and are in town and appear to be well looked after

The only one that I would stay away from these days is Dutton Way as it appears to be extremely run down now.

thanks for all the help so far, we were just about to book at Narrawong Holiday Park when we found out about the dog not being allowed, yes there are still some sites available, it does look a nice spot. looking at the web page for Henty caravan park it looks a bit open and blowy there, not that you can always tell from a photo or two.
perhaps we should do the same as the Portland locals and go to Pt Elliot caravan Park as it's only a 10 minute drive from home. (one of the reasons we go away is to escape all the tourists that come to Goolwa).
thanks again and any more input on the parks of portland still appreciated. chris.

Henty Bay is great, it is very sheltered & also has secluded bush camping sites.
Dogs are welcome & the owners are very relaxed & friendly, they also have one of the cleanest amenities blocks that we have encountered.
It is also the only caravan park in Portland actually on the beach.

Henty Bay is no more open than Narrawong both are right on the sea front and lets face it both are on the Southern Ocean where the winds can be very cold ( like today).

The absolute busiest time for tourists is Christmas to New Year. Once they go home the locals can get to the boat ramp LOL
