as i am a new member and have already found your answers to my questions invaluable and very very helpful, I have another that I hope someone can help me with. Just purchased a garmin gps map60cx from ebay, new, from guy in tasmania. Apparently I need an unlock code to unlock the maps in the trip and waypoint manager. can anyone help with this please. is there a generic code that can be used? thanks Alan
ps seems to be the same with city navigator v6 too.

Hi bushranger69,
the unlock code should have come on a piece of paper with the unit.

thanks for everyones help, regarding the unlock codes for garmin gps map60cx. It is definately not a knocked off unit. Bought from a guy in Tasi who has a good feedback and has sold 7 of these in the last few months. But there was no unlock voucher with the unit. I think the serial number in the battery compartment indicates that the unit is from the USA or Canada, so I guess my 'bargain' unit will cost me an extra couple of hundred to buy an unlock code from garmin. Be VERY wary about buying these 'bargain' units on ebay. The RRP is around the $750 mark I think, these units are $449, I guess that should have told me something. it is still a damn good gps, and everything else is good, just cant use the city nav at the moment. thanks again for all the replies. glad I joined exploroz. Don't be concerned about the price. The reason for the cheapness is NOT because it doesn't have CN6, which is considered seperate software, rather that they have usually obtained them from the US. Apart from some alleged warranty risks, there is nothing wrong with them.
The price is not an omen, rather it reflects the difference in pricing scheme between the US and Australian products.
It would never have come with the CN6 software for that price. Even the $750 genuine Australian version DOES NOT come with that software, therefore it has no affect on the overall pricing.
There is some free software developed for the Australian scene, as Skippy has mentioned.
Enjoy,
Andrew

Garmin units come with a single use licence. If you want to install the software on pc from the original unit you will have to go the Garmin website and buy another licence.

As always it amazes me why people continue to buy units from Ebay, Supposing the unit is HOT, As soon as you try to register it for updates, Codes etc the serial number is going to ring bells and there is not much you do about it
On the other hand if it is a legitimate sale to do map updates you will have to
fork out quite a few dollars for a new CD and Code,
You could have had a new one registered to your name for $699
GPSMAP 60Cx

Probably the main reason why they buy from ebay is that you can purchase one
like this for around $450 delivered (no doubt cheaper elsewhere).......That is a big saving for a lot of people for essentially the same product (ok, maybe different basemap, but who cares).
After owning 4 Garmin GPS's (and a couple of other different brands/types), mainly purchased through JA, i am looking at buying another one through Ebay, full-
well knowing the risks and benefits associated with such a purchase. I have never heard of a Garmin warranty issue gone wrong over a purchase through Ebay yet.....there seems to be a lot of talk and little evidence to say that the risk is unjustifiable.

If they are installed on the GPS they shouldve been unlocked when the previous user had it. Contact them and ask for their garmin details for the mapping. If you go online with the garmin number they should be able to give you, you will be able to change the details to your name address etc, and also retrieve the unlock code.
The unlock code works on the PC and the GPS but its really for the GPS to read the maps and it shouldve been registered against the GPS when the prev dude bought the maps...assuming he HAS bought the maps.
Garmins unlock system is unbreakable, uncrackable and good for them.
Good unit that u have I have one exactly the same.
good luck.

You have got one of the best hand held GPS's, in my opinion, but as said previuosly LEGAL Garmin products are the only way to go. If you do it legal you will have no trouble loading Mapsource products. Their back up and lock codes are foolproof.

If it is a genuine product that was originally purchased by the seller, he would have the unlock code from Garmin. He would also have the purchase date and model serial number on record. Best you get back to him and ask him to send you these details, if he is unable to do this, it is probably a stolen unit that you have bought on Ebay. All the best
Cheers

I think we are reading too much into the initial posting believing things to be stolen.......
- Were you supplied with CN6 either on disk or on the GPS?
- Are there extra mapsets included with Trip and Waypoint Manager in the deal?

thanks for reply, the unit is definately not a knock off. It is brand new in the box, and probably came from USA or Canada.
the City nav is on a CD comes with the unit also on the same unit is the waypoint manager, which works ok. I just havent got the unlock code voucher that supposed to come with the unit, so it will cost me a few hundred bucks more. regards Alan

Thanks Alan,
Is it possibly an upgrade CD? Sometimes free, however they need to have a registered version installed first before using.
Looks like from the other posts that you somewhat sorted outed your concerns.
Enjoy your new toy :-)

Map60CX only comes std with trip & waypoint manager....
CN6 or CN7 is an extra purchase....
Sure the CD might have in on there...but you will have to pay $$ to use it...
Its got me interested - will open one of our stock ones and see *exactly* whats on the current CD

You don't need an unlock code for trip and waypoint manager. If you brought the unit new it would have come with it in the box or how else are youy going to install anything on there unless you do it one by one. Try using Shonkymaps , unless you want to pay for AusTopo
