Just wondering if anyone has information about Mansfield to Harrietville - in particular whether towing a camper trailer is possible and what the track conditions would be like this time of year.

Thanks

Ed the majority of the High country tracks are not open until the 1st weekend in November. At the moment there are insufficient tracks open that allow you to drive directly accross although with some major detours via Whitfield it is possible.
When they do open a camper can be towed accross from Mt Stirling to Abbeyard then over into the Buckland via Mt Selwyn. After rain, track conditions can make it hard to tow as there are a few steep climbs.
The Rooftop series of maps will give you a good idea of the area for planning & the Parks site will give you the current list of both seasonal & fire effected tracks closed.

In addition the tracks that are open currently are fairly dry & in reasonable condition as many were dozed after the fires. Rivers are all low & easy to ford although that can change overhight of course. A chainsaw for the group is pretty important with so much timber falling all the time.

Ed

From Mansfield to Harrietville would take a bit of trip planning and local knowledge. There's no direct route that I'm aware of.

Mansfield is West of the High country, whilst Harrietville is to the east. Better to take the turn off to Bright if you don't have experience in the High Country.

Approx 20km south of Harrietville there use to be a track that went down to Talbotville and then north west to the Wonnangatta. The track comes out at Dandongadale.

It's been quite a few years since I've been up in that area, so others may be able to give you better advice.

Regards

Kim
