Help, please.
I recall being told you can purchase some form of antenna type gizmo that you plug into your fliptop computer that effectively turns it into a GPS, come Navman/Tom Tom affair.
I assume some software would also have to be loaded etc.
Any information as to how such an item/s would work, where to get them and approximate price would be most welcome. Please be aware I'm just a simple man, please put it terms a computer dunce can understand.
Regards,
Jim.

Yes there are those things available but the laptop does take up a lot of room.
There are some good Hybrid GPS systems around that not only have street maps but also Topo Maps for bush driving or even hiking

Yes its called GPS receiver - if your 'LAPTOP" is bluetooth enabled then thats all you need to get - if not you may need to get a blue tooth dongle as cabled GPS receivers are very hard to find now..
then just install software like Ozieplorer - and go to GPS australia website and download the topo maps you need .....
i will be getting a full dvd of the maps of Australia soon so if interested - let me know

Hi Jim,
Yes, there is a gizmo available for the laptop - GARMIN make it and I saw one at the 4WD show in
Adelaide last Friday. It is simply a receiver of satellite signals which a program such as OziExplorer ($150.oo?) can use to make your compter the GPS. Cost of it was about $93.00 and simply plugs into a laptop USB port - the only other things you need is of course the maps to use/view. Here again, you can purchase a HEMA DVD containing most of the 4WD maps you will need and includes 513 topo maps of the whole of AUS. for about $149.00.
In total, you may only have to spend about $450 - $500 to get up and running.
So, not only can your laptop be a GPS but you (or the kids) can also play games, watch movies, listen to music download and store your photos /videos while out an about.
Cheers, Harry

Get a bluetooth one NOT a USB one and make sure it has a SIRFIII chipset as these are currently regarded as the best and most sensitive. They will work in the glovebox even and one less cord to worry about
Do a search on here or go back a week or so there is a big thread about this
