Hi I am looking for some advice on converting my 1997 80 series Landcruiser to gas. I would need it to be dual fuel (petrol/gas).
I have heard that when converting to gas you need to do some work on the head or else it will cause problems down the track??
Also what size tank will fit in my beast and what sort of mileage do would I get from it??

Cheers

Doon,
I have had my 96' 80series in LPG since 1998.
Specs are 120Lt tank (96 usable ltrs)
Impco 225 mixer with LG Converter.
Flashlube auto feed system.

Gets between 400 - 480 per tank but I have never run it empty. The best I can tell you is 48litres of lpg gets me about 240 kms.

I have done just on 200k since the gas conversion and have never had a problem with the 'head' on the motor.
I always make sure that the vehicle starts on petrol and then switch to gas after about 10 mins and do the reverse on my way home. Have the valve clearances adjusted every 50k and make sure the flashlube is kept topped up.

Last time I had the valve clearances done there was still heaps of adjustment space left. I also use Penrite hpr30 in the engine (since new) and think that has alot to do with it as it uses no oil either.

Overall a good thing as it doubles your range and power loss is very minimal. The only time I really notice the power difference is when towing a heavy load up a steep hill.

LPG1 in melbourne did mine.

Thanks for the specs....I will do some investigating into how much ($$$) I'm looking at, but it looks like a conversion is definately going to save me money.
This is all a bit new to me as I planned on buying a diesel but couldn't find what I wanted in my area so I caved in and went with a petrol that's done 123,000kms.
Does yours still have plenty of go on gas when you go off road and 4wding??

Doon,
Yes it has plenty of go. Back when I had mine converted it cost $2400 which included the Kaymar rear wheel carrier.
Not sure what they are worth nowadays.
When I had the last valve clearance adjustment done it turned out 49kw at each wheel on gas which is almost 40 kw more than what the original spec for the engine is (196 in total) as opposed to 168kw.

Like anything if you look after it it will look after you. I don't give it much revs when 4x4ing as I gave up drag / circuit racing years ago.hence no speeding tickets since I got the cruiser and just prefer getting out into the fresh air and enjoying the peace and quiet.

For normal round town driving LPG seems to have more tourque than petrol which must be because of the higher octane level.

If your'e in Vic give LPG1 a call

Cheers again for the advice. I need to make a few phonecalls and get things rolling I think. Am looking at travelling a bit next year so it'd be good if I had the conversion done by then.
If you got any other advice for improving an 80 series feel free to share. I like to hear what other people have done.
