Snorkel sock filters being "sucked" down - myth?

Hi all.

I am not debating these products vs others, or debating other pre-filter products vs nothing, etc.

However, I have read on the forum many times that the sock inserts can be sucked into the snorkel. I got a pack of the Unifilter foam socks today and fitted one in.

I am totally buggered if I can see how it would be physically possible for it to get sucked down in there. There is a solid rubber rim that just doesn't fit, nowhere near it. I have been worried about this particular piece of advice until now I have seen one.

So is this a myth, heresay or rumor? Or has anyone really had it happen to them?

Time will tell, but I would be interested in replies of actual instances.

Tone

I've got a mate, who knows a bloke, well- his son-in- law was talking to a sheila at the pub told her that son's mate knew of a fella that it happened to. So it's gotta be fact !!!!

Hi Tony

No Myth - I seen it happen but not quite in that way.

What I have seen is filiter break apart and a piece been sucked down - but only a filter that has been abused and washed in petrol and after some years foam gets weak and can break up.

Also similar to badly treated and overwashed paper air filter.

Hi Robin. Still equates to myth to me. Poorly maintained and breaking up into pieces doesn't surprise me - thats what foam does. Its not being sucked in whole.

A bit off topic but good for a laugh;
A mate with a small tough truck did not want the expense of a snorkel so he put a flexi tube from the air intake through the firewall into the glove box as that was the highest point he could easily get to inside the vehicle. Another friend was going to go for a ride in the sand dunes and as he got into the truck he tossed his leather gloves (for handling the winch rope) into the glove box.Well, they started the engine and.... sucked the gloves out of the glove box and jamed them half way down the intake hose !

At least he did a good job sealing the pipe up in the engine bay obviously no leaks. Wonder if he noticed straight away or not till the engine stopped breathing ?? Regards Steve M

Was probably a worry at first but then turned to laughter when he realized what he had done. At least it was a good ending. Regards Steve M

I used to have a piece of flyscreen fitted across the intake at the top of the snorkel. When I took the car to a well regarded diesel mechanic he asked why I had it there. My reply was that it was for the big things like moths etc. I said that I didn't think it would restrict airflow much.

After asking my permission he carefully removed it, bunched it up and held the bunched up piece in front of the inlet. It blocked about 25% of the intake. He said the car would be better off without it. Just let the primary filter do it's job and properly, maintain that.
