I have a mate who is concerned about the amount of smoke his Model R51M Series 1 Nissan Pathfinder is blowing at start up and under hard acceleration up
hill. Anybody know of this problem or is it just his vehicle.
There is a suggestion from one particular dealer that his is not an isolated case.
Regards,

Omitted to say that the vehicle is 2.5 litre Diesel.

I take it that this is the 2.5l CRD as in the 2006 onwards model....
if so get it to a dealer, it should not blow smoke except a tiny bit from a redlining traffic ligth departure.
These motors have all measure of trickery to keep particulate matter under control so if it blowing smoke, somethings wrong. If it is the 2007 model (126kw/400Nm instead of 128k/403Nm as in 2006) then it has a diesel particulate filter in the exhaust. These engines must be fed ashless synthetic oil or they will block the DPF and Im on a guess here but this could cause a lot of crap to blow out when the exhaust pressure is high or suddenly increases.
Get it checked out by another reputable dealer.
Ben

check air filter, fuel filter, try somew injector cleaner, if this does not work it will need to be taken to a diesel specialist.

Check out the CEM website - the engine sounds like it might need a damn good flush.

Never looked under the bonnet of a Pathfinder, but I had a similar problem with an Isuzu deisel.
The problem was the valves in the exhaust gas recycle doohickey that takes exhaust fumes and shoves them back into the engine head to try and minimise nasty gasses. (real technical)
The quick fix was to remove the two vacuum tubes off the EGR to see if that fixed it.
If this is the problem, you can apparently totally destroy the environment and block the hoses, or fix/replace the EGR valves.
If Nissan Pathfinders don't have a similar system to the Isuzu engine, you just wasted 30 seconds of your life reading this reply.
Cheers
