Hi everyone, i have a 94 hilux with 2.8 turbo diesel and i had the lovely experiance of it overheating on our way back from the coast in about 35 degree heat, ive been through the aqrchives and found some info about them overheating when towing, our trailer had say about 400 kilos of camping gear, what i would like too know is will this be a continuing problem as it gets warmer, the car is booked in too get some things looked at like the water pump etc while timing belt gets loooked at and then turbo boost chescked afterwards, the motor has about 250000 on the clock

Cheers

HI Nigilor6,Have you just purchased the vehicle ?? or have you had it a while and didnt have any previous issues and has only just started to give you heating issues. The reason I ask is if you have just bought it maybe some one has had a play with either the injector pump or wound the turbo up a bit to get some extra herbs out of it. Maybe the viscous coupling on the fan is not locking up and just free wheeling (common problem had mine done) Injectors need doing, or the turbo's been wound up but havnt done the pump to suit. Is the thermostat opening right up easy to check or for $10 whack another one in. The water pump should be done every 100k with the belt. Its not in the books to do the pump with the belt but good insurance while you have it all stripped down to do the belt. You know Murphy's law !! Is it only when towing or does it even wen the weather warms up a bit or when your climbing hills ?? Regards Steve M

Just to add to Stephen's comprehensive list, is the radiator - tubes may be blocked inside, or on ten outside, fins clogged with mud.

Does the oil pressure change with the temperature?

Make sure they put the shroud back around the fan. Its a prick of a job as when I pulled mine out I noticed it missing. Was repaired up at Forster over 12 months ago so couldnt do anything about it when I came across it. I didnt notice till I pulled it out to clean out mud n crap that they decided not to put the lower half of the shroud back. I could see why, absolute pain in the rear to fit back up and with out it the radiator can be slid in and out very easily but no excuse for dodgy workmanship. Cost me $70 just for the bottom half of the two piece shroud. With out it you would be amazed at the amount of air the fan pulls around the radiator instead of through it. Is yours fitted ?? Could be another issue for keeping it cool. Regards Steve M

If the Lux has had a lift kit installed, the air flow from the grill to the radiator may not be aligned, and under load, the misalignment could be the problem.

First thing I would check would be the viscous fan coupling.
Get a piece of cardboard and completely block radiator except for a circle (100-150 mm diameter) in front of viscous hub,The reason for the hole is to allow some air thru to the fan hub, start up and run motor up to 1500-1800 and monitor both the fan speed and the temp gauge.
If motor has been parked for awhile the fan should run with engine and then drop out, until the hot air, warms up hub causing fan to engage, this may take 10- 15 mins but make sure the temp gauge is being monitored, when the fan kicks in it should stay with engine speed for some time and not drop out in seconds.
These fans fairly roar when they are working correctly so if you haven't been hearing fan engage (You will here it) There is the prob.
It is one of those issues that sort of creep up on you, when you hear one working right, it will be obvious that yours isn't.
