Can anyone give me a simple step by step on how to wire up my 55w reversing light? Ideally i want to have a 3 way switch so i can turn it on independently or when reverse is selected. I'm assuming a relay close the aux battery is preferred. On the relay 30 is power, 87 to the light, 85 to earth and 86 to the switch. I suppose i need to know where to from the switch?

Why not seek the advice of an auto electrician?

G'day Brew and Richard,
Or.......if you're coming up here on thursday for the meeting, I can get you started when you're here. My rear/reverse lights are also wired up via a 3 way switch (centre off, which is optional as far as I'm concerned.......you could also use a 2 way ON/ON switch so it either comes on every time you select reverse, or so that you can switch it on independantly. The idea of the centre off is just so that you don't shine the light unnecessarily if you're reversing in the middle of the night at the drive-in or something like that...hahaha). Brew, I've also got the video camera cable rejoined.......
Cheers mate
Roachie

Don't know if I am comming up there...it's so far up there, cut lunch and dinner,
camping gear, two tanks of diesel and a oil change.
Unless I can find someone who wants to come up with me, lyn has a party to goto.........some under cover wear thing that Im not allowed to goto.....even offered to be one of the models for the night!
The BIG question about you reversing light Roachie is, what sort of warning device have you got connected to it?
Have you ver looked at going to 3 phase power on your Patrol.
Regards Richard

Jeez Luke, that's a bit harsh wouldn't you say? I reckon
young Richard would cut quite a dashing figure in one of those damn fangled male leotard-type thingos (can't recall what they're called)....... Either that or a leather G-banger!!!
Oh hell; I just remembered......it's past my medication cut-off time!!! ;-))

Using your numbers this is how I'm reading this
86 is the trigger (reverse switch, gearbox)
30 powers the relay, (wires big enough to run 55W)
This is what I would do,
run the trigger wire to the three way switch from reverse, run another +ve to other side of switch, nil for centre of switch.
position A = big reverse light comes on with reverse
position B = normal reverse lights, no biggun'
position C = big light comes on ,nil reverse
Where/how relays and wiring done are up to you, just make sure wiring is up to the job, one 55W light wont require a real lot, both the trigger wire and +ve to the switch won't need much at all because the real power for the light will come from the relay,
One thing I will suggest, and that is have some sort in cab warning light indicating that big light is on, IE, illuminated switch
Shane

I wired
mine up just by tapping into the appropiate wiring, but why do you need to switch it on when not reversing.....Hmmm let me guess , you want to shine it at following motorists who don't dip lights, I would say that is illegal ,

Doug
Brews not that sorta person.....LOL
I think he probably wants to use it when setting up
camp etc without the need of having the ign on and the vehicle in reverse..

One classic use I get out of
mine is to switch it on after going through a farm
gate at night.....going through is okay as the headlights shine on the chain, wire-loop etc. However, once you've driven through, the poor missus or other co-driver is in the dark trying to fiddle with the closing of the
gate. I also have a similar work light on the back of the camper trailer which also comes on in the same circuit. Too easy!!!

That's only 5A draw - why not just fuse and switch it Brew ? I just bought another vehicle - it has a Kaymar rear carrier and provision for a work lamp - in the process of making and finishing it off now - will probably tap into an existing circuit close to the tail - one which supplies a 120W max supply to a factory placed cig outlet.

Some reverse switches (in the gearbox) don't like too much current going through them and they burn out. Generally OK but a pain in the bum if it does burn out. Safer to use a relay. More connections to bugger up aswell!!!

Point taken but I'm talking about tapping into an accessory outlet line - its built in by the factory to supply power to devices.

Oh, like a worklight as opposed to a reverse light? Roger that!
