I'm searching for a new vehicle to replace my '99 Hilux - a manual single cab chassis 4WD ute, and because of the excellent Adventure Tray top camper I lug around, it will need at least 140Kw / 400Nm, from a turbo diesel of no more than 3 Litres.
So far, I can only find (126Kw/343Nm) from a Hilux or (120Kw / 360Nm) from a Rodeo. Several manufacturers make more efficient 3L Td engines, but as far as I can find out none of these are available as a cab chassis ute:
LandRover: V6 140Kw / 440Nm
Audi: V6 177Kw / 500Nm
Mercedes: V6 140Kw / 440Nm (ML280) or V6 165Kw / 510Nm (ML320)
BMW: S6 160Kw / 500Nm
Yes, I know some of these are not real 4WD vehicles, and yes, I'm happy to trade potential unreliability for efficiency, power and torque.
Have I missed something, or are Hilux/Rodeo the most powerful stock 3L diesel-engined cab chassis 4WD's on offer in Australia ? Does anyone make a one with a more efficient engine ?

I'm kinda missing something here too - are you saying your current Hilux has 140kw/400nm, and that is the minimum that will carry your camper?
The LC v8 barely exceeds your criteria 151kW /430Nm and that's a V8 4.5 litre, not a 3.0 litre 4 pot.
You won't find a 3.0 litre with these numbers until you go to the V6 VW, Mercedes and the like.

Sorry Gerhard,
I should have made myself clearer - my current Hilux would be lucky to have 90Kw - the 140/400 is what I reckon I'll need from a new vehicle.
Unfortunately the European engines aren't available in a cab chassis !
Cheers,
Nic

We have a Rodeo as a work vehicle it's not that good , bloody uncomfotable and gutless , I'm not a Toyota man but I have driven a couple new Hilux's and I think it's a much better ute.
The ride is still firm but ok and the diesel engine seamed to do the job a lot easier than the Rodeo.IMO
Cheers Scoof. Happy hunting

Hi Jim,
I'd certainly consider a Patrol but have assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that the 3L engine was
well below 140Kw/400Nm - do you know what its output is ?
Cheers,
Nic
