A question for Petrol 80 owners (1FZFE). Just wondering how many kilometres your rig has covered and how the motor is going. Especially interested in the comments from those with high mileage (kilometreage - is that a word?).
Mine has 270,000 and is blowing a bit of smoke. Power steering is leaking. Otherwise it seems to be going
well. But I'm wondering what sort of lifespan remains and whether it is worthwhile investing a few $ to have it fixed.
Thanks from the Moose.

Moose,
mine has about the same K's and doesn't blow smoke or use oil. Its on Gas as
well ..............better touch wood now I think.
Sound like valve stem seals on yours. Not too hard a job.
They are literally a bulletproof engine if
well looked after. I change the oil and filter every 3 mths regardless of how many kms it's done.
Power steering pump kits can be purchased from Toyota and are fairly easy to overhaul.
The main thing that I have heard that kills them is the stupid little water hose under the intake manifold. If it bursts whilst driving it can
cook / warp the head quickly.

G'day Rob
Thanks for that info.
Mine does use oil (as witnessed by the smoke). I am not as careful with the oil changes as you - perhaps I should have been!
What "stupid little water hose" are you referring to? Part of the cooling system obviously - is it something that needs to be replaced now and then?. I'll have to
check it out.

Moose,
It can be viewed from under the car. Its at the back of the engine (passenger side) and it oonly about 4 inches long.
If you lie under the car and shine a torch up behind the fuel filter you will see it. They are difficult to get to but keep an eye on them for swelling and leaking. If it's not swelling or leaking (white powder) don't worry about it.
As far as oil goes I have always used Penrite HPR 30 in
mine since new. I used to use the same oil in my
old car being a Mazda RX4 and those things are known for using oil.
Have a look at the following site for the little heater hose

G'day Rob
You say the power steering pump is "fairly easy" to fix. I like to do my own servicing as fas as possible eg oil changes, plugs, bearings, brakes so I might give the PS a go too. Save money and learn something in the process.
Do you happen to know whether any special
tools are required? Have you actually done yours?
Cheers from the Moose

Moose,
I fixed the one on my Dad's 80 series and it was simply a case of buying a 'seal' kit from Toyota and basically removed the pump from the engine and replaced all of the seals in it. A bit like a clutch master cylinder kit. Get yourself, if you haven't got it already, a Gregorys handbook. They are very detailed and invaluable.
It was the first time I had done one and it is still going many years later. No special
tools required however when getting the seals out be careful not to scratch/groove the mating surfaces. It will most likely be tha large seal on the back of the pump which causes the leak. You can get away with just changing that one.
Good luck
Rob

Moose 230K on
mine and no problems (touch wood). Just replaced the injectors recently, but other than that it has all been fairly routine maintenance. Like Rob, I am pretty careful with the oil changes.
Mine is just a baby, but 400K is not out of the question if they are maintained
well.
They eat fuel, but a very robust engine.

Hi my 80 has only 190,000 and was blowing smoke at about 140.000 . Only if left idling at lights etc.The valve stem seals are the culprit. The manual recommends 15w/40 or 20w/50.
I use PENRITE HPR/60 gas as i run LPG which is 20w/50
This dose reduce the smoke and oil consumption.
If i use 15w/40 the smoke increases and use about a litre plus of oil
every 10.000klm.
The power steering pump is an easy fix if you are handy on the spanners just get a seal kit and fit it.

Hi Moose,
My 1990 with the 3F engine has now clocked over to 338907kms. It does not blow smoke, and a compression
test 2 years ago showed the engine was as good as new. It used to run on gas, but now is back to petrol only. I maintain the engine regularly and the only issue I have is a minor rear main oil leak, that has been in existance since I bought it 10 years ago, but has not changed in its severity in that time. If/when the engine finally dies, I am still unsure on what I will replace it with. The vehicle is too good to replace, so the engine will be replaced instead of selling the vehicle. My now 10 year old son wants it as his first car so lots of love and care still to put into it.
Cheers

Hello Moose
Just back from a two week tour with the
Bourke Police & Community trek which covered about 7,500K in two weeks. The cruiser has now clocked up over 478,500k. The car was
well maintained by the previous owner and I change the oil and filter every 10,000K. It blows a little oil smoke on start up so could use valve stem oil seals. I replaced the noisey power steering pump with a low K unit from the wreckers before the trip. Otherwise it's great and I'd take off for anywhere in it tomorrow!

G'day srobbo,
WOW - looks like there could be a few more K's of life in
mine yet. Thanks heaps for the
feedback. It's going to the mechanic next week for a quote as to what the damage to the hip pocket will be. I had a good look underneath and it looks like the steering box needs work too, so could be expensive. But it has cost me bugger all to date so I can't complain. It's got to be cheaper than upgrading (possibly to a less capable vehicle, becaue the 80 is a great touring and offroading vehicle).
How was the trip.? If I recall correctly we came across a group up on
Cape York many moons ago who were from that same mob. They were having a ball. They appeared to be spead out over a bloody long way - t'was a huge number in the convoy.
Chhers from the Moose
