Telstra has flung a new challenge to the Howard Government - now in caretaker mode - declaring its Next G network has now achieved the same or better coverage as the CDMA network - and stating it is "on track" to close the CDMA network on January 28.

But the Big T faces the obstacle of a condition imposed on its CDMA licence by Attorney-General Philip Ruddock which prevent a switch-off before the Government is satisfied with Next G coverage.

The Government is relying not on Telstra's word, but on an independent survey by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to determine if Next G coverage meets CDMA levels.

Telstra yesterday declared extensive testing conducted by its own teams with strategic partner Ericsson had already shown the Next G network is "bigger, better and faster than CDMA on every measure".

"The Next G network now covers 25 per cent more territory than the published coverage of the old CDMA network, has nearly 75 per cent more towers, offers speeds up to five times faster, and roams to more than 160 extra countries for voice and SMS," said Mike Wright, executive director Telstra Wireless.
Wright said drive test teams travelled more than 120,000km throughout Australia, gathering more than 500GB of drive log files for analysis.

Telstra claims the Next G network, at more than 2 million sq km, is 25 per cent larger than the published coverage of the CDMA network; has more than 6000 sites, nearly 75 per cent more than the CDMA network's 3480; offers data download speeds of 550Kbps-3Mbps, compared to a maximum of 300-600Kbps on CDMA 1x EV-DO; and achieved network call drop performance of less than one per cent within just 10 months.

I think it's called spin doctoring..... I'm not impressed with Next G coverage at all outside metro areas....
Frankly I reckon the claim: "bigger, better and faster than CDMA on every measure". is a load of codswallop....cetainly no coverage at Hawkes Nest but there is at Tea Gardens and there is very good CDMA coverage at Hawkes Nest. No Next G at Tharwa and good CDMA....
Once again the assumption is that everyone wants to send video messages and those who just want a chat and don't live next to a tower are conveniently dismissed....

I live in the Canberra area and there's no way the Next G service is an improvement on GSM . I have had at least four Next G phones in the last twelve months and still don't have a reliable service, except for the bills .

Yep - I've been pestered monthly in recent times by the kiddies that Telstra employ in call centers - exhorting me at every turn to move to Next G as soon as possible (to take advantrage of "blah blah blah").
The reason offered today in my interest was that if we CDMA people all wait till the cutoff, there won't be any phones to supply the many orders and we will be without phones for a couple of months (oh yeh - sure).

Just had a phone call from a young woman from Telstra.
Telstra have been spin doctoring internally well and truly.
She rang me about my home phone, and asked if I had any more questions.
I mentioned being interested in Nexxt G to replace my families 3 CDMA phones.
Was told that CDMA will be out by end of Jan, and by then Next G will have 100% coverage of Australia.
I said - you sure - 100%, every nook and cranny, and the answer was yes.
Even the Simpson desert I asked, yes.

Wow, that is spin doctoring.

Yeah you have to laugh at them sometimes.

We had a small business rep from Vodafone who came and gave a talk to a business group Im involved with, now I have nothing against Vodafone as we have a heap of mobile phones with them and can not complain about them in any way.

After his spel about their phones he went on to talk about mobile internet and the GPRS service they offer.....I was agreeing with this rep until someone asked about the coverage of their mobile internet, his reply was "Oh it will work anywhere in Australia including the Simpson Desert as it uses satellite and not the mobile phone system."

I didn't have the heart to correct him......

Regards Richard

Whilst we're talking about this mob, is there a Brain surgeon who can interpret a Telstra phone bill for me please?

A man would have more luck understanding T E Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom than the dribble they come out with!

We signed up for broadband with Solly awhile back and got them to bill us on the home phone account for the various costs including the hardware. Now we feel like victims to a certain extent - they cocked up the spelling of my name (even though it was on their screen) resulting in me getting a dud email addresss - they then "gave" me another address for free (which is charged for on the bill )! They sent and charged me for a second wireless USB connector at $120, even though I never ordered it (you get the first one free, even if you don't need it). They told me that I could have 9 months service at half price but this emerged later as 6 months. Now the first bill turns up and is of course a total mish mash of convoluted and confusing crap from one end to the other - is this just poor design and accounting management ? No ! Of course not ! It's deliberate....... notice that the only things quite clear are your ID and how much you need to pay .........$$$$$$$$$.
Hoards of people would just pay it and get on with their busy lives.
No time to dissect phone bills.

Yeah you need to be scientist to work out their bills, I mate of mine I work with is real good at it, if you read through them slowly and over and over you'll eventually get the hang. They split up the bill in so many ways thats why it's confusing.

Typically a bill is split up to show:

1. Your Monthy Service Charge - $49 / $69 / $99 etc
2. Data Charges
3. SMS Charges
4. Any charges if you go over your plan
5. Month in advance - Some people are charged this way

If you are using Data a lot then I would recommend a Data Pack to go with your plan rather than paying adhoc. If your are a company with a stack of phones there are specialists who can break your bill down to save you money.

This is as much as I know.

You all may know this "Next G phones work on GSM as well" and in SETTINGS mode Connectivity, 1Bluetooth, Network, 3 Connections. Network...Auto/ Manual than Network Mode...Auto or GSM 900/1800...GSM 850/1900...UMTS (which is Next G ONLY)
I had mine set on UMTS and was wandering why I was not getting a signal in areas when I should...yep they are not going to have a Next G tower in where there is A GSM Tower when these phones work on both net works.

Cheers Bruce.

Am still waiting for the cradle for the Nokia 6120 to come out so I can see what is involved in connecting the broomstick external aerial, power and the laptop to it. Should have come out 2 weeks ago now November.

Telstra sales rep told me that Nokia were bringing out 4 more phones before Feb 08, so may be better to wait. Won't repeat the sales office this person works at otherwise his career at Telstra is over.

Are you talking about the cradle made by 'Force' or do you know of a genuine unit being made by Nokia?
