Hi
I am seriously thinking about purchasing a Garmin nuvi 660. I really want it for off road use like finding great
camp spots on minor tracks however my wife would like it for driving around
Perth.
A few of questions for anyone in the know who can help:
* Will it be able to do these two tasks?
* Can I get mapping software for this unit which will allow me to see those minor tracks in the bush?
* If so, what software do I need in addition to the unit itself?
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to help me out!

I have a 660 and love it. So far I haven't been able to work out how to load the Shonkeymaps I've already downloaded (free) to my PC here at home. There is some convoluted knack to it that I just do not have. Once I can get my good mate Muddy Doe up here at some stage, I will ask him politely to get it going for me.
In the meantime, I have found that the inbuilt maps are quite adequate for 90% of my driving needs.
On a recent trip to NSW, I had the screen set to monitor the speed/trip times/average speeds and maximum speed etc.
Great unit indeed
Cheers

Good to see you like it, pity your going to limit the benefits by not getting the full T4A though

Nuvi 660
To load shonkymaps:
Download img2gps software.
Run img2gps and compile the detailed contour map (installed by shonkymaps) (create file option)
Be patient the program takes a short wait to run and you can crash it by pressing buttons while processing (no message during processing)
Copy the GMAPSUPP.IMG file (generated by img2gps) to
/Garmin
directory on a flash disk root directory and install into Nuvi 660.

Thanks Marq,
But you are talking to a total d!ckhead here as far as understanding what you mean is concerned...... I simply don't know what all that (ie: what you have written above) means.... hahaha
Thanks anyway.
I may have to think again and look into this T4A thingo that Doug is all in favour of.........

Al,
I have a 660. Absolutely love it. It works great in combination with Camps 4 book.
Try this site:

and our own much loved Doug T (QLD):

Tracks4Australia are the maps you need but, like others, I haven't got around to putting it on
mine yet.
Honestly, Doug is the guru on Garmin.

Aussie Al,
Good luck fellow investor, seems like you may be on a winner.
Alas, my IT card is covered in virtual duck poop, which implies a virtual
broome, weilded by a virtual maid, .................I stop.

Hi Aussie Al,
I have the Nuvi 660 and also a Garmin V. The Nuvi is great if only using the built-in maps for navigating to a location, but you cannot upload
routes or have a cookiecrumb trail.
If you want to make up your own
routes with waypoints etc... then I recommend you look at the Garmin Quest (later version of the Garmin V). While its screen is nowhere as big nor a touchscreen like the Nuvi, it has a cookiecrumb trail, ability to store 1,000's of waypoints, tracks and
routes and is IMHO a more versatile unit for 4WDing.
Additionally, it has all the functionality of the Nuvi (GPS wise, not bluetooth connection type features) thus has the built-in maps, navigating, POI's (points of interest) etc...
Cheers
Captain

But if you drive a Nissan/chev like someone else on here you don't need breadcrumbs just follow the oil slick left behind :-)

Hi Aussie
Its a great unit alright, perhaps the best around town, but the Garmin 276c is the better one for 4wding / fishing etc.
The accuracy of mapping is always a compromise and both the 660 & 276c take the same maps.
The normal way of finding and recording your favourite
places is to drive around recording your own track whilst roughly following the inbuilt maps.
When you find
places you save them as waypoints.
You then download these tracks/waypoints to your own PC and build up your own collection.
You can also downloads these paths from other sources ,like this site, into your 276c.
