Water in Fuel

Hi

Number 1 son has a 03 Hilux 4x4 diesel. In the last month the warning light has come on twice for excess water in the filter.
Am assuming he has got water in the fuel tank.
Is this a normal occurrence as I have had diesels for the last 30 years and never had this problem.
Not being mechanically minded should I get the tank drained? I remember reading in a 4X4 mag that half a cup of metho in the tank can help dissipate water in the fuel.
Hope someone can put me right on this.
Thanks

Howard.

The sensor is in the bottom of the fuel filter under the bonnet. Theres a stopcock under there that can be used to drain it immediately. Failure to do so can damage your expensive injector pump. Your handbook should tell you this!

Thanks Phil
Yes we have drained the filter both times as per the book. What my concern is is how much water is in the tanks itself.

Cheers

Howard,
As its happened twice, I'd be draining the tank.
Sounds like a fair bit of water - I'd be guessing it came out of the servo - I'd be getting my diesel elsewhere, preferably a truck stop. But like Owen explained, condensation does occur, and the way to prevent that is to keep the tanks full. I guess your son would be like most boys, and keep the tank empty!!

Diesel fuel treatments, like Chemtech are very cheap and guard against water, algae etc. Just put 20mls in a tank and a litre of the stuff costs about $25.

Air carries water and air replaces fuel in the tank. Condensation occurs and water will build up slowly. Water will dissipate slowly into the fuel and this can be helped along with fuel additive. The water goes through the combustion process with the fuel.

A lot of water in the fuel can come from various obvious sources but high humidity followed by cold nights can be a nuisance too. The drain on the filter is one thing but my advice is to get the vehicle level and drain any water that will spread to the drain plug. Follow up with the filter drain and add a generous amount of additive which may help the injectors too.

That what I did last time I had water in the tank and it worked. Now I am reminded to put some additive in as it has been a year since the last dose. Keeping water out keeps the fungus from growing and blocking the filter.

See what Diesel additives there are that will help move the water/moisture out. Metho helps in petrol engines, not sure about diesel. Fill up the tank elsewhere and see how you go.

sorry a bit plain on the explation Howard....was on the phone to Bucky...

If you suspect water to be in the fuel...idles funny etc....then depending ow much fuel you have in the tank depends how much you pour in....like i said half a bottle (500ml) per full tank...

Dunno how it works - just does - metho soaks up the water then it just gets used through the fuel....no harm done....

Thought this was the prblem with my old suzuki but it turned out that there was plastic stuck in the fuel lines ! ! ! ! I always get a little sus now when the car idles funny...
