You may need to look at why you are thinking about taking it out more than what it will do when you take it out.

Hence:FIND & FIX THE PROBLEM

You have no option to but to leave the body of the Thermostat . It's not like a normal unit where you can completely remove it , if in an emergency situation you can take the guts of it out and replace the base because the base has the seal on it , Go and get 2 new one's from from Toyota ,Yes get two, you will need a spare one day, if you don't have a Thermostat it won't warm up in cold climate

Hi all

What Doug said, go to Toyota, it is the only thing that I get from them that I can get elsewhere. They are very different to every after market one and the only one that does job.

Have fun

The thermostat is there to regulate the temp to the design operating temperature. Everything expands to the design tolerances and wear is minimised. Vehicle manufacturers try to build as cheap as is practical but leaving the thermostat aint. They would not put one in if it were not neccessary contrary to some urban myths like its ok to use tap water in the battery and the radiator.

My 92 Troopy was running hot on my recent trip. Had new thermostat installed (genine toyota, part cost $39), now the temp sits 3 mm off the cold line, and moves very little, no matter how hard the engine is worked. I'm interested in why you wouldn't just replace it? I'm not very mechnically minded - so excuse if this is a dumb question.

Hey if you take off the alternator, you'll get more power from the engine. But then again, maybe it's there for a reason?

In other words, just replace the thermostat - it's a lot cheaper than an engine.

Cheers

Sam
dont touch it....Toyota diesels have a two stage thermistat, which closes off the circulate water through the block port when it opens up the circulate the coolant through the rad port, so removing guts will circulate water through the block unrestricted and you will overheat...it is a common problem with this motor to need a new fan coupling, they are on ebay cheap, i am guessing this is why you asked the question. One way to prove it is the viscous fan is to install an electric fan up front and switch it on when going up hill.
