I have broad band mobile with 3 and it is great. In practice it faster then telstra cable! And not terribly expensive - only 49 per month for 2G. Problem is - it is only works in metro area and AFAIK only sattelite broadband will work outside metro area, but it would cost much more. If you do not like plan, then you can buy modem by yourself (cirka $300, some laptops have buid-in one) and then you can cancell plan at anytime.
Hope it helps.

If you have a 3g phone you can buy a casual data pack for $29 or so per month which gives you 80 megabytes of data.
Thar is enough for emails and a tiny bit of internet banking etc.
You only turn it on when needed and call them and turn it off when you are back home.
It works on your monthly billing cycle so will get added to your mobile account.

OOPS should have mentioned that it is through Telstra, not bigpond.

Have a look at earlier next G posts. I have detailed what the go is in buying a phone to use as a modem and buying data packs.
But you have to have at least a $20 per month for 2 years contract on the phone.

Hi,
A very good way is to buy a NextG prepaid phone.
Telstra now have a 12 months option, so, for $30.00, you have up to a year access to the network and you can also buy data packs as required. they now have a $10.00 data pack that is good for 20MB
or 29/80, 59/200 Meg. The only thing to remember is that they do expire in 30 days unlike the prepay for calls. The beauty of using a prepay phone is that it just cuts you off when you have used your allowance so there is no possibility of racking up huge bills
Cheers

Forgot to say.. buy a pre-pay phone and use it as a modem.
This is cheaper than buying the modem outright which is what you would have to do if you do not want a contract over 2 years.
And note, Bigpond mobile and Telstra Mobile broadband are not the same, even though they operate on the same network. You cannot buy a Bigpond modem and connect it on a casual basis whereas you can buy data packs on the Telstra Mobile Broadband as required.
I found out the hard way as I had been given a shiny Bigpond modem card by a friend who needed the USB version for his new laptop.
Bigpond will not re-connect it, so I went with Telstra prepay which is a better deal for me than signing a contract which includes a "free" modem that I don't need.
Cheers

Been using Nextg bigpond modem since last Dec, it's the best for internet when travelling around AU.
However I suggest Telstra Business modem casual for you.
Start with minimum boost up to the download during your trip and reduce to minimum again after. You will need an ABN but that's 10 minutes work at the ATO website and extra $10 at the accountant every year.

If you don't wanta plan then you can buy the Telstra Bigpond USB modem that works on NextG.
You pay $299 to buy it outright and can then
sign up month by month for service and cancel anytime you wish.

If you can dial into your ISP then you can use a Next-G phone as a dial up modem and you can make 20 minute connections during "my hour." This may not be very high speed compared with home broadband but it will be full dial up speed and 4 times the CDMA phones.

There is always the option in using the library for getting emails.
I have just got a will unlimited emails and downloads and $300 worth of calls for $79 through Optus, this will work where ever you have optus 2g service
