Hi everyone,
Is it an acceptable practice to use a generator at "Free Camp" sites? Or is it generally frowned upon.
I would like to be sensative to those around me, but I will need to use a generator on my travels.
Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Selena

Hi Selena,
Good to see consideration for fellow campers!
I'm biased, coz I use solar, but the best approach is to put yourself in the neighbour's position and work out what times would not annoy them. Even ask them.
Generally, gennies running after about 9pm are annoying to others, even the quiet ones. And get yourself a long extension cord so you can plonk the gennie some distance away and behind a mound or rock. If the
camp is deserted during the day, then that's not a bad time to bring up the batteries and bring the fridge temp down.

The only time I've ever gone and asked someone to turn theirs' off was about 10pm one night at a freebie
campsite. He said he thought is was so quiet that no-one could hear it. (Don't believe the bull written on the side of the box) Most freebie's we've been to have gensets going, usually until just after sunset. They seem to get there early enough to get a few hours of charging in before the evening shift arrives. Geni's are a necessary evil I suppose.

HI Selena
I'm another solar type. Once you've gone solar your hearing improves considerably - why, I can a hear a genny when it's off!
I like the idea of running it during the day when fridge needs it most and have misfortune of having a neighbour who ran theirs until late. I'm inclined to think 9pm is far too late - principally because it's your oportunity to appreciate the silence and bush noises of the night. Gennies also often are linked to flood lights, - again these are great for some purposes ... but .. again they interfere with what many of us are there for.
I really like the idea of placing your genny behind a good noise barrier (eg a sand hole, behind a tree.. ) and also the idea that you should be by far the closest person to it
Best wishes as you set out - wish I were out there again. Free camps are the go

i think a gen should be used only in the morning, say about 10am to12/1pm max. that should be long enough to recharge house batteries from the night before's use. i have used
mine at night, but only when i have been alone in my own
camp.
