For two weeks now I'm trying to buy a car and be smart about it. I own a 95mod Landcruiser Trayback and thinking of buying a 2004 Trayback Turbo Diesel. Found one in a dealers yard for 44k. The dealer doesn't want to pay me more than 13.5k for my trayback which is worth about 18k retail. He wants to get window price on the Turbo and pay me stuff all on my car so I had the sh%$# and left. Now looking at a Patrol Trayback which is around 5k cheaper. Looking at a complete change I thought why not buy a Rodeo 4WD and safe another 10k.......but would I be happy?
Now my head hurts and I have no idea what to do........can somebody help me think?
cheers
Reiner

Once you go down the track of purchasing a cheaper make or vehicle, if you want to get back up into a similar make and model that you have takes it's toll on your funds.

Hi RG
Have you thought of selling privately to get close to what you want and then go back a screw the dealer down with no trade buy?

Yesterday oil futures hit $90 . Buy the Rodeo and $15000 of shares in oil or in a global rescource trust . You will have a vehicle that you are happy with , your investment will pay for your fuel , you will be hedged against fuel price rises , and at the end of your driving career you get your money back .

Have your cash or finance ready, walk in on a Sat about 11 am tell the dealer to go and sell this deal to your boss, lets see how good you are.
Then you offer him/her this, say you give me 18000 for my ute I will give you 42000 for your ute right here right now, I have the funds they will be in your bank Monday, make your money on the next bloke you need to do all the work for.
You watch him/her try harder, If there is no movement walk out and stay out.
Worked for me, once on a trade in and twice on a walk in I want that car deal.
It's either a guaranteed 42 grand turnover for a Saturday or nothing.
Cheers Steve

When we were buying the Pathie, we soon found out dealers don't like cash, they much rather have you finance the car through them. We had just sold our house and we had the cash sitting in the bank, we didn't have trade in(
well they would not take 1992 VP commodore station wagon, we still have it sitting in the driveway). It took from the end of June to the end of September for the Pathie to arrive. Had her first service done Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.......very very long story, first
services are suppose to take an hour. And we did not get a discount because " Pathie sell themselves...they don't owe us advertising"....according to the dealer.

"He wants to get window price on the Turbo and pay me stuff all on my car"
This how they make money. If you walked and they let you go would indicate to me that they were probably giving you their best possible deal.
Like mentioned above, try selling yours privately, and even if you have to hire a car for a few weeks whilst shopping for the next one, you should be
well in front.

Sorry Reiner , but I have going to have a bit of a dig at you.
You are unhappy that a dealer is selling you a vehicle at retail and trying to buy your car wholesale ?
Umm sorry to be the one that informs you of this , but hello , this is what they do for a living.
If he buys a call for his yard , he buys it wholesale and tries to make a retail earn. If however that market price drops on that car, whilst he has it in stock , who cops that ?
well he dealer does.
I really would like your view, on why! he should buy your car retail and then sell it for the same price and cost himself money.
Let me do the sums for you . You want retail on your car, then he would have to road worthy the vehicle , detail it , put it on the lot and spend money on advertising it and if he sells it , he would have to provide a 3 month warranty on the vehicle . In all this , let just hope hat the person buying it doesn't have a trade in, as he would want retail for his car also.
Now lets not start on what it costs to run a yard.
Sorry to be a little cynical in this post , I do though have a issue when people have a dig at yard's because they feel hard done buy. We need to face facts , cars depreciate in value .
Please take the advise of a fellow poster and advertise the vehicle and put up with all the tyre kickers . You may then appreciate what yards put up with.
Regards Eric
if you are wondering if I work in a yard the answer is no and yes I work in the industry as a wholesaler . We are the ones the yards rings to get a value on your vehicle . If you want to blame anyone , blame us and we will in turn blame the market place. lol

While you are there Rocky - are Redbook values to be trusted ? I'm selling a unit privately and need to get an idea of the worth some how - what people ask for in the papers can't be a real guide.

I do understand all that.........I sell too, but you cant tell me they can't give a $1000 somewhere in the deal.
They are not buying my car in the papers they are trading it on a deal. They must have a mark-up of at least $6000 on the turbo and they would pick up about $4000 on my car. Take away $3000 for cost they still make $7000 in the hole deal.
Worst case they make $5000 on that deal...........give and take.
Regarding what the yards put up with......I think we all do that more or less......part of the parcel mate.
cheers

Firstly Darian , Red book is a indicatir , not always a good one .
Best way to know , call 2 dealers who stock your type of vehicle and ask them ,what they would pay for it ? then call a local auction house and ask what did the last vehicle like yours make. then add 2k for a reasonable private sale price.
Reiner your heart may be in the right place but your maths isnt lol
what he paid ? what the margin is ? anywere from 3 and yes maby 6 if he bought very
well.
Cost to concider , repairs /freight / advertising / rent / wages and the killer WARRANTY....
Now , yes it's a cat and mouse game , as stated above make your offer firm and walk away . if there is a sniff of a deal, you will get a call back. If you dont , you then know you werre
miles out.

Honestly Reiner, if you are going to let $1000.00 stop you buying a 40k plus car, I don't think you really wan't it bad enough.

And the type of vehicle plays a part too.
Cruisers and 4.2 Patrols are good property, the yards know they are going to be able to sell relatively easily so why would they discount it?
Go buy a v8 Disocovery or other vehicle that is harder to move and you have more bargaining power, you want it they want to get rid of it.
And if you had of gotten a "great" deal on the vehicle you were looking at you may very
well have found out down the track why they were willing to "off load it"

Reiner,
Its hard to bargain when the HDJ79 factory TD traytops are in huge demand. People are not sure about the new V8, and if they want one have to wait 5 months, and Nissan no longer provide competition.
Here in SA they go for over $40k at auction; one dealer wants $41k for a 2002 model like
mine, another had an RV advertised last weekend for $52k.
If you like to hang onto your vehicles for a while, a few grand won't make any difference.
Mine cost $41k three years ago, when it was 2 years old with 70k on the clock. Don't think its depreciated much since.

Reiner,
I'm with you. I went through the exact same thing a while back. Dealer wanted top dollar for the second hand "tidy truck"(rough as guts) and bargain basement for
mine(overserviced/$15k of bolt on goodies).
I would have as little to do with the industry as possible. Sell yours privately and buy the same. Or, consider spending another $10 odd thousand and have a broker hunt down a deal on a brand new base model V8 diesel ute. Thats what I'd be doing.
This ones almost certainly gone, but a good idea of what could be had privately.
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/70scool/message/705
I saw a 4.2RV troopy on rvpoint for over $60k!!! WHAT! I know its a buyers market and that "dealers" have to make money but if you have the time to sell yourself, why not. I've not heard of a bad experience from anyone who's bought through a broker new either. Work out exactly what you want and let them do the dealing...
Good luck
Matt

Bolt on goodies worth almost nothing, but make your car easier to sell than one without.
