Hello to all, took the gu to the Powerlines track for a night run last night, about 3/4 of the way through the gu developed a loud knocking noise as l was making my way up a steep track. I could only here the noise when the gu was under load under light throttle the knocking was bearly audible. I then proceeded to put the gu in 2wd and the noise disappeared so l have tracked it down to the front drivers side hub. If anyone could shed some light on what my noise is would be greatly appreciated eg. maybe cv, axle spline or bearing ?

Sounds like a stuffed CV joint. Is it worse when in a turn near full lock? If so be pleased, at least the engine didn't go Bang!

May be one hub didn't lock in properly.

try to manually lock the front hubs and see if the problem still occurs.

Jason,
Not sure how technically competent you are but if you want to remove the auto locking hub undo the cap heads with the centre bolt manually locked and remove the auto locking hub and have a look sometimes you can have problems with the lugs, you could also check the splines whilst you've got the hub off.
Taking a bit longer, bit more diagnostic, you could disconnect the propshaft from the rear of the transfer case, jack up and support the from chassis so the wheel are well clear of the deck and start the vehicle up in low 1 in 4WD, moving the steering slowly from side to side this will help you find the noise easier.
There is more risk involved you have to be careful doing this sort of stuff obviously but taking the right precautions, good quality axel stands in the right places, no kids around etc etc

Martyn,
Thats what the noise sounds like that the splines in the hub are grabing then slipping under load !

Jason,
Sorry I didn't reply sooner, have you sorted your problem out yet? Did you find out what the noise was? These sorts of noises are hard to diagnose without either hearing it or having a lot more detail. Could be the splines but usually once they go that's it there's no return to normal. CV joints will click at various volumes depending on load for quite a while. saying that when they smash it can be quite spectacular, this usually happens when you least want it to.

Martyn,
Had the hubs off and they seem to be ok, cv joint has no clicking noise coming from it when I turn.So I have narrowed it down to the diff, spoke to Rob Robinson at Robinson Bros 4WD and he seems to think it could be a collapsed axle bearing. I'm taking the GU to his workshop on Wednesday for them to look at it. Worst case scenario it could be the crown wheel or the pinion gear, guess I'll find out Wednesday. Thanks for your advice been most helpful !
